INTRODUCTION :
When you enjoy your favourite music or while watching your favourite TV Series or
A movie or whatever , Do you know how you’re able to hear ? .. Let’s see !
HOW WE HEAR ?

Outer ear to Brain

HOW WE HEAR ?
Pinna ( Outer Ear ) ----- Ear Canal ----- Middle Ear ----- Ear
Drum ----- Ossicle ( Hammer , Anvil and Stapes ) ----- Cochlea
----- Hair Cells ----- Auditory Nerve ----- Brain

The brain process these signals , and so you hear . Now let’s see
about them briefly !
THE VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR
NERVE
 This nerve acts like a pathway from the inner ear to the cortex of the brainstem . This is
also called as eighth cranial nerve .
 This nerve splits into two parts :
• Vestibular nerve and
• Cochlear nerve

FACT : Each Cochlear nerve contains almost 50,000 axons in which 95% of them
carry
information from the inner hair cells .
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS
AUDITORY NERVE ?
 Auditory nerve also known as cochlear or acoustic nerve carry
balanced signals from our ear to the brain which helps us to hear .
 It is present in the INNER MOST part of the ear .
 It’s function is to carry information from the inner ear to the
brain.
 It travels through a bone of the skull known as the temporal bone.
 Auditory neuropathy is referred to as the form of neural or
nerve deafness .
This is how our ear works !
COCHLEA :

It gets it’s name from a Latin word meaning snail . It is a spiral shaped tube filled
with liquid and is present in the inner – most part of the ear . It has sensory cell ,
also known as hair cell which lines up the entire length of the cochlea . The hair
cells at the base are responsible for high frequencies and hair cells at APEX are
responsible for lower frequencies .

Cochlear looks similar to a

snail !!

AUDITORY PATHWAY :
AUDITORY PATHWAY :
 It transmits special sense of sound from the cochlea hair cells of
the inner ear to the brain to be analysed .
 This transmission is called as AUDITORY PATHWAY .
HOW IS THE BRAIN INVOLVED
IN HEARING ?
 The auditory nerves flows through different parts of the brain
where the cortex tends to respond to the frequency .
 Hence , the primary and secondary cortex of the brain helps in
hearing .

FREQUENCY : The number of oscillations / vibrations per

minute . It is measured in (hz) Hertz .
