Why do we use the passive
voice?
The Agent=by
We are normally not interested in the ‘doer’ of an action
in a passive sentence. When we want to mention the
‘doer’ , we use the preposition by.

Picasso painted Guernica in 1937.

Guernica was painted by Picasso in 1937.
Verbs with Two Objects
They offered the job to Tom.

The job was offered to Tom. OR Tom was offered the job.
 Rewrite the following sentences using the Passive Voice.

1. Someone told us to be here at 9.

We were told to be here at 9.
2. John sends eleven red roses to Bertha every Friday.
-Bertha is sent eleven red roses (by John) every Friday.
-Eleven red roses are sent to Bertha (by John) every Friday.
3. They have already repaired the computer.
The computer has already been repaired.
Rewrite the following sentences using the Passive Voice.

4. The aquanauts will do extensive research on the coral reefs.

Extensive research will be done on the coral reefs.
