GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
The earthquake occurred in an area of complex tectonics
caused by the continuing collision between northward moving
Indo-Australian Plate and Eurasian Plate, which creates the
Arakan Yoma mountains. In this zone of highly oblique collision,
most of motion is accommodated by North-South trending
Sagaing fault, a major right lateral strike-strip fault that runs
through the western and central part of Myanmar.
The remaining component of shortening across this zone
causes distributed deformation of eastern Myanmar and Thailand
extending into Laos. This deformation is partly accommodated by
a set of southwest left lateral strike slip faults.
The fault cloest to the epicenter of
earthquake are Mae Chan and
Nan Ma Faults, and it appears
likely that the earthquake was
caused by the western segment of
Nan Ma Fault. The force
mechanism is due to the left
lateral movement of fault, away
from the main zone of seismic
activity.

Almost all the buildings were deteriorated in this earthquake and

there were only rubble structures. Thus, all had to be re-fabricated
after the earthquake and the photos mentioned above are the
current situation of road and the condition of the religious
building in the disaster area.
