PRES. JOSEPH E. ESTRADA

-Joseph Ejercito Estrada, also known by the

nickname Erap, is a Filipino politician and
former actor who served as the 13th president of
the Philippines from 1998 to 2001. He was
born on April 19, 1937 in Tondo, Manila.
Allegations of corruption spawned an
impeachment trial in the senate and in 2001
Estrada was ousted by “People Power 2” after
the prosecution walked out of the impeachment
court when the senator-judges coted “no” in
the opening of the second envelope. In 2001,
Estrada was sentenced by a special division of
the Sandiganbayan to reclusion
perpetua for the plunder of $ 80 million from
the government, but was later granted pardon
by president and his former deputy Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo.

-One of the challenges of the Arroyo
Administration was the high incidence
of poverty. An unstable economy and
violent counter-protests launched by
Estrada’s supporters. Corruption is a
problem in all of the institutions of the
Philippines including the criminal
justice system specifically the police,
prosecutorial and judicial organs.
Education, health, and public
infrastructure were not given much
priority even though there were large
increases in the national budget.
Unemployment , poverty and hunger go
together. All these three have worsened
under the Arroyo Administration.

-Maria Gloria Macaraeng Macapagal Arroyo often
referred to by her initials GMA, is a Filipino
academic and politician who served as the 14th
president of the Philippines from 2001 until 2010.
Before her accession to the presidency, she served
as the 10th vice president of the Philippines from
1998 to 2001. She is the first woman to hold two
of the highest offices in the country: Vice president
and speaker of the house. GMA was born on April
5, 1947 in San Juan Manila and daughter of
former President Diosdado Macapagal and Dr
Evangelina Macaraeng Macapagal. Arroyo was
arrested on November 18, 2011 after a Pasay court
issued a warrant of arrest against her. This
followed the filing of a complaint for electrical
sabotage by COMELEC. The arrest warrant was
served at St. Luke;’s Medical Center, Taguig
where Arroyo had been confined.
-The Power Reform Act was
enacted to assure the people of
sufficient and cheaper electricity in
the future. She started some
infrastructure projects like the
Bandiwa- Tuba Viaduct in Benguet,
Roll-on/ Roll-off National
Highway, and Diosdado Macapagal
Highway. She initiated some
agricultural programs, like the
Ginuntaang Masagani Ani and the
Hybrid Rice Commercialization
Program.
