PRESENTATION ON HOW TO CALCULATE SHUTTERING AREA

FOR VARIOUS MEMBERS ALONG WITH HOW TO FIND THE

QUANTITY OF CEMENT,SAND,WATER IN PLASTER
How to calculate shuttering area? learn about shuttering.

 Shuttering is an arrangement done for vertical surfaces to support

the wet concrete till it attains the desired strength. Shuttering is a
part of formwork. Follow below to know how to calculate shuttering
area.
Calculating Shuttering area:-

The shuttering is calculated in terms of Sq.M in the Rate Analysis of

Shuttering. In order to calculate area of shuttering you must know how
to calculate peripheral length (Perimeter) of an any shape.

Peripheral length (Perimeter):

Perimeter is the distance around a two dimensional shape.

For example square has four sides determine one side length is “s”
then peripheral length = s+s+s+s = 4s

Important Formulae for Calculating Shuttering Area:

Perimeter of Square : 4S (S = Length of Side)

Perimeter of Rectangle : 2[L+B] (L=Length & B = Breadth)

 Perimeter of Circle : 2πr (r = Radius of circle)
 Area of Rectangle = Length x Breadth
 Area of Square = Side x Side
 Remember, each member in a structure either it may be Slab or Beam
or Column it has six sides (faces).
 Shuttering area can be calculated by using two methods. One is by
below mentioned formula and other method is by calculating the
individual areas of faces. To keep it clear, i used both the methods in
this article.
 Formulae of Shuttering Area:
 Shuttering area = Peripheral length (Perimeter) x Depth
Calculation of Shuttering Area of a Column:-
Consider a column as shown in below figure. To calculate the
shuttering area follow the below steps:-

For Column, shuttering is done for four sides and other two sides (the
top of column is left for filling concrete and bottom is fixed to ground
level). Neglect top and bottom in calculation.
 The side of column is in rectangle shape with side length “l” and
breadth “b”

 Peripheral length of Rectangle is = l+b+l+b = 2l+2b

 Shuttering area = Peripheral length (Perimeter) x Depth

 Peripheral length = 2×0.8+2×0.6 = 1.6+1.2 = 2.8Sq.m

 Total Area of Shuttering of a column = 2.8 x 4 = 11.2 Sq.m

 In case, the shape of column is Circular then the below mentioned

fomulae is used for calculating shuttering area
 Shuttering area of Circular Column = 2πr x Depth
Calculation of Shuttering Area of a Beam:-
For calculation purpose i am considering the beam as shown in figure:

For Beam, shuttering is done in 5 sides and the other side (top
side is left to fill concrete)

Shuttering area can also be calculated by finding out the

individual area of each faces as below:

Face 1 : Area of rectangle = L x B = 0.8 x 4= 3.2

Face 2 : Area of rectangle = L x B = 0.6 x 4= 2.4
Face 3 : Area of rectangle = L x B = 0.8 x 4= 3.2
Face 4 : Area of rectangle = L x B = 0.8 x 0.6 = .48
Face 5 : Area of rectangle = L x B = 0.8 x 0.6 = 0.48

Total Area of Shuttering = 3.2 + 2.4 + 3.2+ 0.48 +0.48

= 9.76.Sqm
Calculation of Shuttering Area of a Slab:-
Slab rests on beam, there is no need of providing shuttering to the slab on four
sides. Same as beam & column, the top of the slab is left to fill concrete and for
curing. Hence, shuttering is only provided to the bottom of slab.

The below mentioned values are considered for finding the shuttering of a
Shuttering area of Slab = Bottom area of slab = L x B
Bottom Area = 5 x 4 = 20 Sq.m
Quantity of Cement, Sand & Water required for Plastering
Plastering refers to protecting a wall or ceiling by laying a plaster (Cement plaster). Plastering is done to
remove surface imperfections caused by brickwork and to keep the surface smooth for painting.

There are many different types of plastering materials out of them, cement plaster is extensively used. Some
other types of plastering materials include lime plaster, clay plaster

Calculating the quantities of Cement & Sand required for plastering:

General points to be remembered in Plastering work calculation

The ratios mentioned in plastering are volumetric ratios of Cement & Sand (Ex. Cement:Sand = 1:5, 1 part of
cement and 5 parts of sand in a mortar).
The overall thickness of plastering should be minimum 20mm including two coats.
Cement has a dry density volume of 1440Kg/m3
Each bag of cement weighs = 50 Kgs or 110 lbs
The Volume of each cement bag = 50Kgs/1440 = 0.0348 m3.
The dry density of sand = 1600Kgs/m3
The plastering is done in two layers (two coats): The first coat of plastering is laid with the thickness of
minimum 12mm (usually ranges between 12-15mm) and this coat is called as a Rough coat or Primary coat.
The second coat should be laid with the thickness of 8mm and this is called as a Finish coat or Secondary coat
of plastering.
Total Plastering = First coat + Second Coat
Different ratios of Cement mortar used for plastering are tabulated below:
Different ratios of Cement mortar used for plastering are tabulated below
1:6 & 1:5 This ratio is usually used for Internal plastering of bricks

1:4 Used for Ceiling and external walls

1:3 As its a rich mortar mix and it is used where external walls are prone to severe
climatic conditions.

It is also used for repair work

Steps involved in calculation of plastering quantities:

Find the total area of wall to be plastered in Sqm (m2).Consider the ratio and
thickness of plastering

Calculate the Total Volume of Plastering

Find out the Volume of Cement and Sand individually for both the coats Calculate the
total volume of cement & Sand required for plastering

Now coming to the calculation part,

We are considering the below values for calculation purpose:
Wall width and height is 10m and 10m.

Ratio of First coat of plastering (Cement:Sand = 1:5) with the thickness of 12mm.
the ratio of secondary coat of plastering (Cement:Sand = 1:3) with the thickness of
8mm.
Calculate the Area of Plastering

Area = width x height = 10 x 10 = 100m2

Find the Volume of Plastering
Volume of First Coat = Area of Plastering x Thickness of Plastering
= 100m2 x 12mm (Convert mm to m)
= 100×0.012 = 1.2m3
Hence, Volume of First Coat of Plastering = 1.2m3
The volume of Second Coat = Area of Plastering x Thickness of Plastering
= 100m2 x 8mm (Convert mm to m)
= 100×0.008 = 0.8m3
Therefore Volume of Second coat of plastering
Quantity of Sand required for Second coat = (Total Volume of second coat plastering x No. of
parts of sand)÷ Total Parts = 0.8 x 3/4 = 0.6m3

Finding the quantity of water required for plastering:

Amount of water to be added in mix depends upon the moisture content present in cement, sand
& atmosphere.
Quantity of water = 20% of total dry material (Cement+Sand)

= 20% of (574+2560) = 0.2 x 3134 = 627 litres.

Final Result:
As mentioned above volume of 1 bag of cement (50kgs) = 0.0348m3
For 0.4m3 = 0.4 x 50 / 0.0348 = 574Kgs = 11.4bags

Similarly, for Sand 1m3 = 1600Kgs.

1.6 m3 = 1.6 x 1600 = 2560Kgs = 2.5tonnes

Quantity of Water required = 627litres.

Brickwork Calculation & Formula

The size of the modular brick is 190 X 90 X 90 (refer the picture)

Mortar Thickness is 10mm

Assume required brickwork volume is 1 cubic metre (m3) Any brick walls consist of
bricks and cement mortar.

So, first of all, we are going to find the volume of bricks with mortar thickness and
then volume of bricks alone.
Volume of bricks with mortar
Volume of 1 brick with mortar = 200 X 100 X 100 ( 10 mm mortar thickness on all
sides) = 0.2 X 0.1 X 0.1

Volume of brick with mortar = 0.002 Cum (m3)

Therefore, Number of bricks required for 1 cubic metre = 1/0.002 = 500 No.s
Volume of bricks without mortar
Volume of 1 brick without mortar = 190 X 90 X 90

Volume of 1 brick without mortar = 0.001539 Cum (m3)

Volume of 500 bricks without mortar = 500 X 0.001539 Cum

Volume of bricks without mortar for 1 cum = 0.7695 Cum (m3)

Therefore,

Required amount of cement mortar = 1 Cum – Volume of bricks without mortar

= 1 – 0.7695

Required amount of cement mortar = 0.2305 Cum (m3) (Wet Condition)

Note – The above volume is in a wet condition that means we need 0.2305 cement mortar in
mixed condition (after adding water). In order to find the dry volume, we need to multiply 33
% as bulkage of sand.
Dry volume of a mortar = 0.2305 cum X 1.33 = 0.306565 cum

We know the mortar ratio is 1:6 (1 part Cement & 6 Part Sand = 7 Part)

Required amount Cement quantity in brickwork = 0.306565 X 1/7 X 1440 kg

Density of cement = 1440 kg. The reason to multiply this density is, the above
multiplication will give us only required amount of cement quantity in brickwork as a
cubic metre. But we need cement in Kg. Therefore we are multiplying the 1440 kg
density of cement to calculate the cement quantity.

Required amount Cement quantity = 63 Kg = 1.26 bags (50 Kg bag)

Required amount of Sand = 0.306565 X 6/7 = 0.26277 Cubic metre (m3)

Therefore, For 1 cum of brickwork, we need

500 Numbers of bricks

63 kg of cement
0.263 m3 of sand.
