KINDS OF

STITCHES
Stitches – refers to the
length of thread which
shows on the right
and wrong side of the
cloth either machines
stitch or hand
stitches.
There are
classifications of
stitches the temporary
and the permanent.
Basting – a temporary
means of holding a
section of a fabric
together before they are
finally stitch.
Kinds of
basting
1.Even basting – is a series of long
running stitch which shows equal
length in stitches and spaces. It has an
even stitch or about ¼ inch in length.
2.Uneven basting – is a series of
longer running stitches with
shorter space between them. It is
principally used for making
centerlines and pocket positions.
3. Diagonal basting – is particularly
used in preventing two layers of
cloth from shifting position. The
stitches on right side are in slanting
position.
4.Guide basting – is made
with short stitches in very
long pleats alternating.
5. Pin basting – is a kind
of basting which uses pin
to hold the fabric or
cloth.
BASIC HAND STITCHES
 
Stitches – refers to the length of

either machines stitch or hand
stitches. There are classifications
of stitches the temporary and
the permanent.
Here are the kinds
of permanent hand
stitches:
 
 
A. Running stitch – this is kind of
permanent stitch. These are
small or short stitches of equal
length. It is used mostly for
hand gatherings or a decorative
stitch.
B. Back stitch – this is
another type of permanent
stitch. This is similar to the
machine stitch and usually
made of 1/8 inch long.
C. Outline stitch – this
is similar to the
backstitch but it is
slanted.
D. Herringbone or catch stitch –
used to hold raw edges of the
iterfacing in place along fold lines. It
can be used when hemming heavy
fabrics that stitch to prevent from
showing on the right side of
garments.
E. Overcast stitch – this is a
slanting stitch used to keep the
seams from raveling.
F. Chain Stitch- this is a sewing
and embroidery technique in
which a series of looped stitches
form a chain-like pattern.
G. Blanket Stitch - this stitch used to
reinforce the edge of thick materials.
Depending on circumstances, it may also be
called a "cable stitch" or a "crochet stitch". It
is defined as "A decorative stitch used to
finish an unhemmed blanket. The stitch can
be seen on both sides of the blanket.
