1
GASOMETRY ANALYSIS
• method used to assay the gases (02, CO2etc.).

• depends upon the measurement of volume of gases liberated under the condition described under the assay.

• gases samples which are going to be assayed is made to absorb by means of some liquids called as absorbing
liquid.
• After the absorption of gas by absorbing liquid the residual volume of gas sample is measured by means of
balancing tube.
• For different gases, different absorbing liquids are used:
Carbon dioxide- 50% KOH
Oxygen- ammonical copper sulphate

2
ASSAY OF OXYGEN
• carried out by using gas burette

• tube B is connected to a gas absorption pipette comprising two bulbs of suitable size

• Pipette is charged with ammonical copper sulphate solution with the two way tap open to tube B

• And draw the solution just to the level of the tap by moving the mercury reservoir.

• Open the two way tap to tube A, completely fill the burette and tube A with mercury and close the two way tap.

• Connect a rubber tube to the exit value of the cylinder of gas being examined through a suitable pressure reducing
device and pass a current of the gas through the tube for 1 minute.

• The specified quantity of the gas enters the burette by lowering the mercury reservoir, the two way valve is opened to
tube B and all gas is transferred to the pipette.
3
• The tap is closed and the pipette is gently shaked

ASSAY OF OXYGEN
• The specified quantity of the gas enters the burette by lowering the mercury reservoir, the two way valve is
opened to tube B and all gas is transferred to the pipette.

• The tap is closed and the pipette is gently shaked

• After 15 mins, when most of gas has been absorbed by the liquid, the residual gas is drawn back to burette and the
procedure is repeated until the volume of residual gas is constant.

• The volume of residual gas is measured from the burette.

ASSAY OF CO2
• carried out by using gas burette, in which tube B is connected to a gas absorption pipette comprising two bulbs of
suitable size

• Charge the pipette with 50% KOH solution with the two way tap open to tube B draw the solution just to the level
of the tap by moving the mercury reservoir.

• Open the two way tap to tube A, completely fill the burette and tube A with mercury and close the two way tap.

• Connect a rubber tube to the exit value of the cylinder of gas being examined through a suitable pressure reducing
device and pass a current of the gas through the tube for 1 minute.

• The specified quantity of the gas enters the burette by lowering the mercury reservoir, the two way valve is opened
to tube B and all gas is transferred to the pipette.

ASSAY OF CO2 …..
• The tap is closed and the pipette is gently shaked.

• After 15 mins, when most of gas has been absorbed by the liquid, the residual gas is drawn back to burette and the
procedure is repeated until the volume of volume of residual gas is constant.

• The volume of residual gas is measured from the burette.
