Parts of speech are the grammatical building blocks of sentences; it is how we
categorise the function of words. In English, the main parts of speech are:
• noun – person, place, thing or idea
• pronoun – grammar’s space-saver, replaces a noun, e.g. I, them, it
• adjective – describes a noun, adding colour and detail
• verb – indicates an action
• adverb – describes how, when or where an action occurred
• preposition – reveal position in time and space, e.g. before, at, on
• conjunction – shows how words are connected, e.g. and, but, so
• interjection – strong emotions taking over, e.g. wow, ouch, hey
• determiner – determines quantity, e.g. one, some, a, the, all
