Storage Fire Protection LEC-04

 To effectively prepare a fire protection plan for a storage occupancy, the following steps should be
followed:
 Determine the commodity classification.
 Identify the storage arrangement.
 Determine the storage height and clearance from the top of storage to sprinklers.
 Develop a protection scheme (automatic sprinkler system).

20.6.2 Ceiling Height LEC-04

 3.3.24 Ceiling Height. The distance between the floor and the underside of the ceiling above (or roof deck)
within the area.
 A.20.6.2 Maximum storage height is the usable height at which commodities can be stored above the floor
while the minimum required unobstructed space below sprinklers is maintained.

 3.3.29 Clearance to Ceiling. The distance from the top of storage to the ceiling above.
 Note : Should not be confused with “clearance.” The term clearance is the distance from the top of storage to the
sprinkler deflector (Ref: NFPA13 Hand Book 2019Ed, Subsection 20.6.4)

 20.6.2.2 For corrugated metal deck roofs up to 3 in. (75 mm) in depth, the maximum roof height shall be
measured from floor to the bottom of the deck.
 20.6.2.3 For decks deeper than 3 in. (75 mm), the maximum roof height shall be measured to the highest
point on the deck.

9.5.6 Clearance from Deflector to Storage. FIRE TECH.

LEC-04

 9.5.6.1* Unless the requirements of 9.5.6.2, 9.5.6.3, 9.5.6.4, or 9.5.6.5 are met, the clearance between the
deflector and the top of storage or contents of the room shall be 18 in. (450 mm) or greater.
 9.5.6.3 A minimum clearance to storage of 36 in. (900 mm) shall be permitted for special sprinklers.
 9.5.6.4 A minimum clearance to storage of less than 18 in. (450 mm) between the top of storage and ceiling sprinkler
deflectors shall be permitted where proven by successful large scale fire tests for the particular hazard.
 9.5.6.5 The clearance from the top of storage to sprinkler deflectors shall be not less than 36 in. (900 mm) where
rubber tires are stored.
 9.5.6.6.2 Shelving, and any storage thereon, directly below the sprinklers shall not extend above a plane located 18
in. (450 mm) below the ceiling sprinkler deflectors.
