The document discusses various standard cutting tools used in machining operations. It describes single point cutting tools which have a single cutting edge for material removal. Milling cutters are also discussed, including various types like face mills, end mills, thread mills, and fly cutters. Drills and allied tools are described as well as their uses. Broaching tools are explained along with linear and rotary broaching. Finally, gear generation tools like hobs are mentioned for cutting gears through relative motion of the cutting tool and workpiece.

a single point for cutting purpose is called single point cutting tool. Single point cutting tool consists of only one main cutting edge that can perform material removal action at a time in a single pass. Single-Point cutting tools are used in turning, shaping, Planning ang similar operatins. Milling Cutters Milling cutters are cutting tools typically used in milling machines or machining centers to perform milling operations (and occasionally in other machine tools). They remove material by their movement within the machine (e.g., a ball nose mill) or directly from the cutter's shape. A face milling cutters is used to produce flat surfaces. Rough end mill cutters are used to quickly remove large amounts of material during heavier operations. Slab Mill is used when you have to remove more amount of material from the work piece. Thread mills cutters are used for cutting internal and external threads. Fly cutters are basically rotary tools that use one or more single point tools for plane surfacing. A hobbing cutter is used to make gears. A hobbing machine is a milling variant used to cut sprockets, gears, and splined parts using a specialist cutting tool known as a hob. Dovetail cutters are specialized tools for cutting a dovetail angled grooves into a workpiece and are used for fitting or joining parts. Milling Cutters Milling Cutters Drill and Allied tools Drill or drilling machine is a tool primarily used for making round holes or driving fasteners. It is fitted with a bit, either a drill or driver, depending on application, secured by a chuck. Some powered drills also include a hammer function. Drills are very widely in speed, power, and size. Drills are commonly used in wood working, metal working, construction, machine tool fabrication, construction and utility projects. Specially designed versions are made for medicine, space, and miniature applications. Drill and Allied tools Drill and Allied tools Broaches Broaching is a metal cutting operation using a toothed tool known as broach. There is two type of broaching (1) linear broaching (2) rotary broaching. In linear broaching, which is the more common process, the broach is run linearly against a surface of the workpiece to effect the tool. In rotary broaching, the broach is rotated (using lathe and screw machine) and then pressed against the workpiece to cut predetermined shape. The broaching further classified into internal, external, push, pull, vertical, horizontal etc. following figure shows the common internal cutting using broach. Some industries which widely uses Broaches are Fasteners and gears, Automotive, Agriculture, Industrial manufacturing, Oil and gas, Heavy equipment, Automotive. Broaches Broaching is used when precision machining is required, especially for odd shapes. Commonly machined surfaces include circular and non-circular holes, splines, keyways, and flat surfaces. Typical workpieces include small to medium-sized castings, forging, screw machine parts, and stamping. Even though broaches can be expensive, broaching is usually favored over other processes when used for high-quantity production runs. Gear Generation Tools Gear generating involves gear cutting through the relative motion of a rotating cutting tool and the generating, or rotational, motion of the workpiece. The two primary generating processes are hobbing and shaping. Hobbing uses a helically fluted cutting tool called a hob. Gear manufacturing refers to the making of gears. Gears can be manufactured by a variety of processes, including casting, forging, extraction, powered metallurgy, and blanking.
