BED

BATHING
BHCI LEVEL 1 FACULTY
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define the concept of Bed Bath.
2. Determine the purposes of bed bath.
3. Enumerate the different types of bed bath and its definition.
BED BATH
• Removing of accumulated oil, perspiration, dead skin cells and
some bacteria by means of water, soap and adequate skin
rubbing.
INDICATIONS
1. Bed ridden patients
2. Coma patients
3. Major surgery
4. Orthopedic patients with surgery
5. Mentally ill patients
6. Certain infections
7. Patients with amputation surgery
PURPOSES
1. Cleaning the skin
2. Stimulates circulation
3. Produces a sense of well-being
4. Excellent opportunity for the nurse to assess ill clients.
TYPES/KINDS:
1. CLEANSING BATH – given for hygiene purposes.

 Complete bed bath – washing of the entire body of a


DEPENDENT CLIENT in bed.

 Self-help bed bath – given for patient in bed but are able to
bathe themselves but NEEDS ASSISTANCE for washing
the back and perhaps the feet.
 Partial Bath – washing only the parts of the body that might
cause discomfort or with unpleasant odor for dependent or
assisting during self –sufficient care.

 Tub bath – tub baths are preferred rather than the bed; used
also for therapeutic baths;

 Shower- use by the ambulatory patients but needs minimal


assistance from the nurse.
2. THERAPEUTIC BATH – bath usually ordered by physicians which
gives physical effects to soothe irritated skin or to treat an area where
medications may be placed in water.

 Sitz bath – cleanses and reduces pain and inflammation of perineal and
anal areas; used for clients who has undergone surgery or childbirth;
clients sits in a special tub or basin.

 Medicated bath – aids in relief of skin irritation and creates an


antibacterial and drying effect. (Oatmeal, cornstarch, sodium
bicarbonate)
