Soccer & Head Injuries

Jacob Reider, MD

What is a Concussion?
… caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with

an ‘‘impulsive’’ force transmitted to the head.

… results in the rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurologic function that resolves
by itself.

… may result in nervous system changes but the symptoms reflect a functional

disturbance rather than a structural injury.

… results in a set of symptoms that may or may not involve loss of consciousness.

… no abnormality on CT scan or MRI is seen in concussion.

… should be prevented whenever possible.

… MUST be recognized quickly and managed properly

… can be deadly if NOT managed properly

What Next?
• Proceed to the next
level if asymptomatic
at the current level.
• Each step should
take 24 hours
• One week to
proceed through full
protocol
• If ANY symptoms
occur, drop back to
the previous
• level and try to
progress again after
a 24-hour period of
So What?
• Concussion = ~ 5% of all soccer injuries in
players over 12
• By college, 70% of soccer players report
having had at least one concussion.
• Once a player has a concussion, they are
at much greater risk for a second
concussion and prolonged symptoms.
• Return to play too early can cause death.
This happens every year in the US – most
often in football players.
Recommendation
• Headgear encouraged for all players over 12

• Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT2)

in pockets of all coaches.

• Return-to-play (RTP) protocols should be

strictly enforced (not just a doctor’s note).

• Headgear be required for all players who have

had a previous concussion
