CHAPTER TWO

2. BASIC DRAWING AND EDITING COMMANDS

Objectives

 After completing this unit, you will be able to:

 Creating 2D Drawings

 Know Basic Drawing Editing Commands

2.1 Creating 2D Drawings

 Several methods are used for constructing accurate drawings:


absolute coordinate entry, relative coordinate entry and
tracking/direct entry.
 Other methods of ensuring accuracy between parts of constructions
are by making use of Snaps, Grids, Object Snaps (Osnaps), Polar
tracking and Dynamic Input (DYN).
 Snap, Grid, Osnap and DYN can be set from the buttons in the
status bar or by pressing the keys F3 (Osnap), F7 (Grid), F9
(Snap), and F12 (DYN).

1. Drawing your first line with AutoCAD
 Step 1: Use the left-click button of your mouth to select the LINE icon from draw
toolbar, or select the LINE icon from draw panel locate on the ribbons HOME tab, or
type the letter L at the command line and enter press <Enter>.
 Step 2: Move the cursor into the graphics window and pick a random location inside
the window with left-click button, then move the mouse to a new position and pick
again.

2. Drawing Lines with Absolute Coordinates
 Step 1: Select the Line command icon and at the specify the first point
prompt, type 2,2 and press<Enter>.
 Step 2: At the specify the next point, type 8,7 and press <Enter> to end the
command.

3. Drawing Lines with Relative Coordinates
 Step 1: Turn off Orthomode(F8) and on Dynamic Entry(F12), then Select the Line
command icon and at the specify the first point prompt, type 1,1 and press<Enter>.
 Step 2: At the specify the next point, type 2,3 and press <Enter>.
 Step 3: To draw the second angled line, At the specify the next point, type -2,-1 and
press <Enter>.

4. Drawing Lines with Polar Coordinates
Step 1: To draw the angled line, turn off Orthomode(F8), then select the Line command and type 1,1 for the location of the

start point and press<Enter>. At the specify the first point prompt, move the mouth above and to the right of the start point

and type 1.5 and press<Tab> key and type 45 and press<Enter>.

Step 2: At the specify the next point prompt, move the mouth above and to the left of the second point and type 1.0 and

press<Tab> key and type 135 and press<Enter>.

Step 3: At the specify the next point prompt, move the mouth below and to the left of the third point and type 1.0 and

press<Tab> key and type 160 and press<Enter>.

Step 4: At the specify the next point prompt, move the mouth below and to the right of the fourth point and type 1.0 and

press<Tab> key and type 45 and press<Enter>.

6. Line Command
 Step 1: select the Line icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to specify start point, define start point by left-clicking to select a
point in the graphics window or by entering an absolute coordinate and pressing <Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to specify the next point, define the next point of the line the line by
left-clicking to select a point in the graphics window or by entering absolute, relative, or
polar coordinates and pressing <Enter>.

7. Construction Line Command
 Step 1: select the Construction Line icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to specify a point, type H and press <Enter> to place a horizontal
construction line, type V and press <Enter> to place a vertical construction line, or type A and press
<Enter> and angle value at the enter angle of xline: prompt to place a construction line at an angle.
Press <Enter> after entering the value for an angle.
 Step 3: At the specify the next point, prompt select a point on the screen through which the
construction line is to be drawn. You can continue to pick for placement of the other construction lines
or end the command by pressing <Esc> or <Enter>.

8. Polyline Command
 Step 1: select the Polyline icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to specify start a point, type absolute coordinate 1.8 and press
<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to specify the next point or [Arc/Halfwidth/Undo/Width], move your
mouse to the right (with Polar Tracking turned on), type 4,5 and <Enter>.
 Step 4: When prompted to specify the next point or [Arc/Halfwidth/Undo/Width], type A for
arc and press <Enter>.
 Step 5: When prompted to specify the next point or [Arc/Halfwidth/Undo/Width], type W for
width and press <Enter>.
 Step 6: When prompted to specify starting width(0.0000), type 0.06 and press <Enter>. When
promoted to specify ending width<0.060>, press <Enter> to accept the default line weight.
 Step 7: When prompted to specify endpoint of arc or
[Angle/Center/Close/Direction/Halfwidth/Line/Radius/Undo/Width], ensure that Polar
Tracking is tracking at 270 and type 2 for the distance and press <Enter>.
 Step 8: When again prompted to specify endpoint of arc or
[Angle/Center/Close/Direction/Halfwidth/Line/Radius/Undo/Width], type L and press <Enter>.
 Step 9: When prompted to specify the next point or [Arc/Halfwidth/Undo/Width], type W for
width and press <Enter>.
 Step 10: When prompted to specify starting width(0.0000), type 0.0 and press <Enter>. When
promoted to specify ending width<0.060>, press <Enter> to accept the default line weight.

9. Polygon Command
 Step 1: select the Polygon icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Enter number of sides, enter a value and and press <Enter>.
 Step 3: At the specify center of polygon prompt, select a point on the screen by left-
clicking or typing coordinate values.
 Step 4: When prompted to Enter an option [Inscribed in circle/Circumscribed about
circle]: type either I for inscribed or C for circumscribed , and press <Enter>.
 Step 5: When prompted to specify radius of circle enter for the radius of the circle in
which the polygon will be inscribed or circumscribed about, and press <Enter>.

10. Rectangle Command
 Step 1: select the Rectangle icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify first corner point or
[Chamfer/Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width], type 1,2 and press <Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to specify other corner point or [Area/Dimension/Rotation], type
6,2 or @6,2 and press<Enter>.

11. Arc (Start, End, Radius) Command
 Step 1: select the Draw pull-down menu, highlight Arc, and pick Start, End, Radius or
select the ARC Command from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify start point of arc or [Center], type 4,5 and press
<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to specify end point of arc: type #8,5(with dynamic input) or
4,0(with dynamic input) and press<Enter>.
 Step 4: Try it again except type 6,7 for the center and press <Enter>. When prompted
to specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: type D and press<Enter>.
 Step 4: When prompted to specify diameter of circle: type 1 and press<Enter>.

12. Circle Command
 Step 1: Select the Circle icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify center point or [3P/2P/Tlt], type 2,7 and press
<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: type 1 and
press<Enter>.
 Step 4: When prompted to specify radius of arc: type 3 and press<Enter>.

13. Revision Cloud Command
 Step 1: Select the Revision cloud icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of
Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify start point or [Arc length/Object/Style], pick a point
on the screen and draw the revision cloud either clockwise or counter clockwise.
Selecting a point close to the beginning point will close the cloud.

14. Spline Command
 Step 1: select the Spline icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify first point or [Object], type 2,2 and press <Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to Specify Next point, type #4,5 (with dynamic input on) and press
<Enter>.
 Step 4: When prompted to Specify Next point, type #6,2 and press <Enter>.
 Step 5: When prompted to Specify Next point, type #8,5 and press <Enter>.
 Step 6: When prompted to Specify Next point, type #10,2 and press <Enter>.
 Step 7: When prompted to Specify Next point, press <Enter>.

15. Ellipse Command
 Step 1: Select the Ellipse icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: at the Specify axis endpoint of ellipse prompt, pick the start point of the major
axis of the ellipse.
 Step 3: at the Specify other endpoint of axis prompt, pick the location of the endpoint of
the major axis, or define the endpoint with coordinate, and press <Enter>.
 Step 4: at the Specify diameter to the other axis prompt, drag the mouth in the direction
desired for the minor axis and enter a distance from half the length of the minor axis and
press <Enter>.

16. Ellipse Arc Command
 Step 1: Select the Ellipse Arc icon from the Draw toolbar or the Draw panel of Home
tab.
 Step 2: at the Specify axis endpoint of elliptical arc prompt, pick the start point of the
major axis of the ellipse.
 Step 3: at the Specify other endpoint of axis arc prompt, pick the location of the
endpoint of the major axis, or define the endpoint with coordinate, and press <Enter>.
 Step 4: at the Specify distance to the other axis prompt, drag the mouth in the direction
desired for the minor axis and enter a distance from half the length of the minor axis and
press <Enter>.
 Step 5: at the Specify start angle prompt, enter an angle relative to the point defined in
Step 4 where the elliptical arc should begun.
 Step 6: at the Specify end angle prompt, enter an angle relative to the point defined in
Step 5 where the elliptical arc should end.

2.2 Editing 2D Drawings

2.2.1. Erase Command
 Step 1: Select the Erase icon from the Modify toolbar or the Modify panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Select objects, you can select them by left-clicking and
selecting in the following ways: Window (picking left to right), Crossing Window
(picking right to left), or by typing Crossing Polygon (type CP), Fence (type F) and
Lasso (click and hold down the left mouse button, then drag to select objects). When you
are finishing selecting the objects to erase, press <Enter> to complete the command.

2.2.2 Copy Command
 Step 1: Select the Copy icon from the Modify toolbar or the Modify panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Select objects, pick the objects you would like to copy by selecting
them either individually or with a window and press<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to Specify the Base point, pick a point on the object. The base point
can be thoughts of as a handle on the object to be copied.
 Step 4: When prompted to define the Displacement, use the mouse pick a point on the
drawing window located at a specific distance from the base point of the object, or enter
absolute, relative or polar coordinates, to define the point where you want to place the copy.

2.2.3. Mirror Command
 Step 1: Select the Mirror icon from the Modify toolbar or the Modify panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Select objects, pick the objects you would like to mirror by selecting them
either individually or with a window and press<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to Specify the first point of mirror line, define the first point of the mirror
axis by selecting a point in the graphics window where you want the mirror axis to begin.
 Step 4: When prompted to Select the second point of the mirror line, select a second point in the
graphics window defining the other end of the mirror axis.
 Step 5: When prompted to Erase source object [Y/N], press <Enter> to retain the source object(the
prompts default is NO ) or type a Y and press <Enter> to erase the object being mirrored.

2.2.4. Offset Command
 Step 1: Select the Offset icon from the Modify toolbar or the Modify panel of Home tab.
 Step 2: When prompted to Specify the offset distance, type the value of desired offset distance and
press<Enter>.
 Step 3: When prompted to Select object to offset, select the object by left-clicking.
 Step 4: At the Specify point on side to offset prompt, pick a point on the side of the object where you
want the new object to be created.

2.2.5. Array Command
 Step 1: Select the Rectangular Array command from the
Modify toolbar or the Modify panel of Home tab. and select
objects to be arrayed and press<Enter>
 Step 2: Enter the number of columns and rows desired into the
Columns and Rows fields of the contextual ribbon.
 Step 3: Next, enter the desired spacing between rows and
columns into the Between fields of the contextual ribbon. Press
<Enter> or the Close Array.
