PLATE TECTONIC MODEL

A. FILL ME UP!
Objective: Identify the layers of the lithosphere.
Procedure: Comprehend the Reading Resources
and Instructional Activities from your Learning
Module. Using the concept map below, complete
the entire ideas showing the layers of the
lithosphere
LET’S READ!
What is Plate Tectonic?
Earth’s lithosphere consist of layers, the crust and
the upper part of the mantle. The crust is made of a
variety of solid rocks like sedimentary, metamorphic, and
igneous. It has an average density of 2.8 g/cm³ and its
thickness ranges from 5 to 50 km. The crust is thickest
in a part where a relatively young mountain is present
and thinnest along the ocean floor.
There are two kinds of crust: the thicker but less
dense continental crust and the oceanic crust which is
relatively thinner but denser than continental crust.
According to the plate tectonic model, the entire
lithosphere of the Earth is broken into numerous
segments called plates.

What is Plate
Tectonic?
PLATE TECTONIC
 A theory which suggests that Earth’s
crust is made up of plates that interact
in various ways, thus producing
earthquakes, mountains, volcanoes,
and other geologic features.
PLATES

Rigid sections of the lithosphere that move as a unit.

PLATES

Rigid sections of the lithosphere that move as a unit.

PLATE TECTONIC MAP

What are the 7 major tectonic plates?

What do the arrows in the map indicate?
Are all plates moving on the same directions?
ANSWERS:

1. African Plate
2. Antarctic Plate
3. Australian Plate
4. Eurasian Plate
5. North American Plate
6. South American Plate
7. Pacific Plate
PLATE TECTONIC MAP

What are the 7 major tectonic plates?

What do the arrows in the map indicate?
Are all plates moving on the same directions?
ANSWER:

 The arrows on the map tells the

direction of movement of each
plate. Each plate is slowly moving
relative to each other, causing
geologic events to happen along
their boundaries.
PLATE TECTONIC MAP

What are the 7 major tectonic plates?

What do the arrows in the map indicate?
Are all plates moving on the same directions?
ANSWER:
 No, they are moving at different
directions depending on the types
of plate boundaries they belong.
