Academic Art
Modern art includes artistic work mostly from the
1860s to 1970s.
Victorio Edades was a Filipino artist in the
20th century who was later named a
National Artist in 1976.

Bonifacio Cristobal is a Filipino painter born on June 16 in Sorsogon. He
moved to Manila shortly after he graduated to pursue studies in art then
transferred to Royal Academy of Florence.
Capas by Demetrio Diego
Demetrio Diego (1909-1988) studied Fine Arts at the University of the
Philippines. Noted for his oil paintings of rural maidens and for his pencil
and charcoal sketches. Subjects dealt mostly on rural scenes and folk
art.

Botong Francisco was a Filipino muralist from Angono, Rizal. He was one of
the Filipino modernists that broke from Amorsolo’s Romanticism in the
Philippines. His arts is a prime example of linear paintings.

Cesar Legaspi was born on April 9, 2017 in Tondo, Manila. Legaspi was a
Filipino National Artist awardee in painting. an active member of the Art
Association of the Philippines and was part of the Neo-Realists
Binibining Filipina by Diosdado Lorenzo
Diosdado Lorenzo (1906-1983) studied in University of Santo Tomas
School of Fine Arts and pursued his favorite subject rural landscapes. His
arts were greatly influenced by Italian Naturalism and Impressionism.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho born on May 25, 1914 was a Filipino painter known
for her Social Realist and post-Cubist portrayals of Filipino Culture.
Brown Madonna by Galo Ocampo
Galo Ocampo is a modernist painter. Among his paintings, the "Brown
Madonna" garnered attention in 1938 because of its depiction of Jesus
and Mary as non-Caucasian, brown Filipinos; It was also said to be "flat
and two-dimensional".

Hernando Ruiz Ocampo was a Filipino artist best known for his abstract
paintings. Following in Modernist traditions, Ocampo used bold color
palettes and biomorphic shapes inspired by both his country's landscape
and by science fiction writing.

Anahaw by Jose Pardo
Jose Pardo 1916-2002 belonged to the first generation of modernist painters in
the Philippines. A full-time architect and dedicated teacher, His works include
drawings, paintings, editorial cartoons, and poetry.

Bislak by Ricarte Puruganan
Ricarte Puruganan (1912-1998) Was born in Dingras, Ilocos Norte. He was
a part of the Thirteen Moderns, fused Filipino folk art and Western
modernist techniques in his pieces.

Arsenio Capili was born on October 28, 2014. He studied at the School of
Fine Arts in University of the Philippines. He was one of the lesser known
members of the Thirteen Moderns.

Vicente Manansala
Vicente Silva Manansala (1910 – 1981) was a Filipino cubist painter
and illustrator. He was a member of the prominent
Cruz, Manansala, Lopez family clan.

These artists explored different mediums, techniques
and themes that were at the time considered as “new”
to those who were more used to images that are closer
to how they looked like in reality. Audiences found it
difficult to understand the Thirteen Moderns to how
they depict art.
