Oxygen analyzer

Muthulakshmi.V
Msc. Nursing II year.
Introduction
• It is used for measuring the concentration of oxygen.
• Based on the detection methods there are two types of oxygen analyzers.
• The measurement principle is based on the strength of the oxygen
magnetic properties of oxygen molecules.
• In hospitals it is used to know how much oxygen a patient is recieving
Oxygen analyzer
• An oxygen analyzer for stack gas measures the content of oxygen in the
exhaust gas after combustion.
• It provides data to help control the fuel air ratio in the combustion process.
• The fuel – air ratio in the combustion process is crucial when optimizing
combustion and boiler efficiency
Uses
• To provide optimal concentration of oxygen
• To decrease the risk of oxygen toxicity
• To titrate oxygen for patient needs
• To prevent air pollution, conservation of energy and safety management
• Application in other quality control systems
Use of oxygen anayzer in hospital
Continuously measure and display the concentration of oxygen in the
inspiratory time of a patient breathing circuit
• During administration of anaesthesia gases
• Hospital supply lines
• Compressed gas cylinders
• Critical care ventilators
Parts of oxygen analyzer
• Oxygen detector with electronic sensor – electro chemical sensor cell
• Microprocessor with analogue
• Digital converters
How an oxygen analyzer works
• The oxygen analyzer measures the para magnetism of air
• The air being measured for oxygen is filtered by passing it through a
diffuser before
• Then it is passed through the two chambers
• One chamber attracts oxygen via it’s magnetic field and
• Other chamber attracts air .
Types of oxygen analyzer
• Zirconia oxygen analyzer
• Para magnetic oxygen analyzer
Principles
Zirconia oxygen anlyzer
• Direct method
• Zirconia become conductive at high temperature, more conductive when
temperature increases
• Heating the element allow a different partial oxygen concentration of
gases to come into contact with the opposite side of the zirconias, creating
an oxygen concentration cell
Cont’d
• These icons travel through zirconia element to the other electrode
• At that time the electromagnetic force generated between he two
electrodes which is contained in potassium hydroxide bath
• Oxygen enters a teflon semi permeable membrane and pics up electron
from (-) gold cathode to (+) lead anode
• The flow of electron is proportionate to the level of oxygen
Paramagnetic oxygen analyser
• Indirect method
• Based on the scientific principle that oxygen is a paramagnetic material
• When oxygen is introduced into the test cell, the oxygen in the sample is
attracted to the point of maximum field strength
• The magnitude of dumbbell displacement is proportional to the amount of
oxygen in the sample
• The measurement of the dumbbell is detected by light beam from a light
source exterior to the test cell.
• The light beam is reflected from a mirror on the dumbbell body to an
exterior photocell
• The output of the dumbbell is amplified and transmitted to an indicating
unit that is calibrating to readout the oxygen content in the test sample in
percent
Calibration
• Press and hold the cal.button on the analyzer for at least 3seconds to
activate calibration
• The analyzer will detect a stable sensor signal
• When obtained the analyzer will display the assumed calibration gaas on
the LED display
