• Study of body’s physical movements
• Understanding non-verbal cues help in
developing one’s ability to use them more
effectively in their presentation
• Non-verbal communication enhances the
impact of the verbal communication

OCULESICS
• Simple non-verbal communication device
• It is not enough to look at the audience; you should
know how to look at them
• The speaker who looks at the audience arouses their
interest and captures attention
× Avoid gazing at one part of the audience or one
listener
× Avoid look over the heads of listener or ceiling
× Avoid looking frequently to the manuscript or
visual aid

FACIAL EXPRESSION
• Conveys emotions with remarkable accuracy
and intensity of your feeling
• It should reveal
– Your interest and enthusiasm for the topic
– Your knowledge and confidence about the topic
– Your interest in the listeners and desire to
communicate to them

GESTURE
• Expression of any part of your body (Head,
Hands, Face, Shoulders) which illustrates or
reinforces your idea while you speak
– Use them naturally and spontaneously
– Should help to clarify or reinforce your ideas
– Should be suited to the audience and occasion
– Do not overuse

• The way you conduct yourself when you face
the audience
• Pay attention to what you do before, during
and after your speech

PROXEMICS
• Study of physical space in interpersonal relations
• Four types of Space :
– Intimate (Personal touch to 1.5 feet)
• Family, Lovers, Spouses, Relatives and Parents
– Personal (1.5 Feet to 4 Feet)
• Close friends, colleagues, peers
– Social (4 Feet to 12 Feet)
• Official relationships
– Public (12 Feet to 30 Feet)
• Degree of detachment is very high
