Relation and Function

Relation is a set of ordered pairs. The domain of
a relation is a set of first coordinates. The range
is set of second coordinates
 Example:
( 4 ,1 ), (1 ,0 ) , (9 ,7), (4 , 3)

Domain Range
( 4 ,1,9 ) ( 1 ,0 ,7, 3 )
 FUNCTION
Function is a relation in which each element of domain
corresponds to exactly one element of range.

• A function is a set of ordered pairs ( x , y ) such that no two

ordered pairs have the same x- value but different y- values.

• Using a functional notation, we can write

• f (x) = y.

• All function are relation, but not all relation are function.
• Its clear in the definition that it is a function if there is no two
ordered pairs in a set of ordered pairs has the same x- value or
the abscissa , and the has different y- values.

• EXAMPLE;

• (1 ,2) , (2 ,3) , (4 ,5)

FUNCTION because its satisfied the definition of a function

• (1 ,2) , (1 ,3) ,(3, 8)

• NOT A FUNCTION because its contradict the definition of a
function.

The easiest way to determine if an equation is a
function or not.
If the degree or highest exponent of y is even,
then the given equation is not a function.
Example:
x= y²
The degree of y is even ,therefore this is not a
function.
