Prepared by: Miss Lourgielene Khay S. Viesca LPT,

MAEd
Gender refers to the roles, behaviours,
activities, attributes and opportunities that
any society considers appropriate for girls
and boys, and women and men. Gender
interacts with, but is different from, the
binary categories of biological sex

SEX VS. GENDER

“Sex” refers to the biological differences between males and

females, such as the genitalia and genetic differences.
“Gender” is more difficult to define, but it can refer to the role of a
male or female in society, known as a gender role, or an individual’s
concept of themselves, or gender identity

SEXUAL
ORIENTATION
Sexual orientation is the emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction that a
person feels toward another person

Examples:
• Heterosexual. People who are heterosexual are
romantically and physically attracted to members of
the opposite sex: Heterosexual males are attracted to
females, and heterosexual females are attracted to
males. Heterosexuals are sometimes called "straight."

Homosexual. People who are homosexual are romantically and physically

attracted to people of the same sex: Females who are attracted to other

known as gay. (The term gay is sometimes used to describe homosexual
individuals of either sex.)

Asexual. People who are asexual may not be

GENDER IDENTITY

Gender identity is defined as a personal conception

of oneself as male or female (or rarely, both or
neither). This concept is intimately related to the
concept of gender role, which is defined as the
outward manifestations of personality that reflect
the gender identity.
