Solar System
The Sun, the eight planets with their satellites and some
other heavenly bodies like asteroids, meteors and comets
form the Solar system. The Sun is at the centre of the solar
system.
Solar system contains:
 THE SUN :The sun is the largest member of the solar system. All the
planets, and satellites, asteroids, comets revolve around it. It produces a lot
of heat.

 THE PLANETS: The planets are celestial bodies that do not have their own
heat and light. There are eight planets in our solar system ,i.e., Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
 THE SATELLITES: The satellites are celestial or heavenly bodies that
revolve around the planets. The Moon is the only natural satellite of the
Earth. The satellites rotate on their own axes.

 ASTEROIDS: Asteroids are the small planet-like heavenly bodies in the

solar system. They are large pieces of rocks floating in space.
 METEORS: Meteors are the small pieces of rocks that revolve around the
sun. The meteors can be seen in the sky only when they enter the Earth’s
atmosphere. Most of them burn up and become gases.

 COMETS: Comets are celestial bodies made up of snow and rocky dust.
They also revolve around the Sun in their own orbit. When the comets
reach near the Sun, they develop a long tail that starts glowing.
EARTH
The Earth is the fifth largest planet in the Solar system and is the third planet
from the Sun. It is the only planet in the solar system that supports life. The
Earth is the habitat of many animals and plants.

When seen from outer space, it looks blue and is called ‘Blue Planet’ due to
the presence of water on its surface. Our Earth is surrounded by a blanket of
air called Atmosphere. It has gases like Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon
Dioxide. These gases are necessary for life. The atmosphere protects us
from the harmful ultraviolet radiations coming from the Sun.
