CONJUGATION OF VERBS

(MASU TO NAI)

Steps in conjugation for “MASU FORM” to
“NAI FORM” (casual negative form of the verb)

1. Identify which group the verb to be conjugated belongs.


- Group 3 verbs or the irregular verbs always end with “suru”
and “kuru”
- Group 2 verbs or the ichidan verbs end with “iru” or “eru”
- Group 3 verbs the Yodan verbs DO NOT belong to either
group 2 or 3

2. Apply the following rules by changing the verb endings .


- Yodan (Group 1 verbs) This Is where things get a bit
complicated. After dropping “masu” you should follow the
chart below based from the last syllable, then replace the last
syllable based from the chart.

Chi, Ri - ta. ra Shi Shinai
Ni,Bi,Mi - na,ha,ma Ikimasu Ikanai
Ki - Ka
Gi - Ga

2. Apply the following rules by changing the verb endings .


- Ichidan (Group 2 verbs) change “masu” to “NAI”.
- Irregular (Group 3 verbs) change “shimasu” to “SHINAI”
