growth of the organization
• Thanks Deepak. Now we will be discussing about the material issues in pharma sector and their impact on the
business.
• Starting with Product Quality, it is well known that good quality products are much more effective and efficient,
and provides better livelihood for the consumers and helps to build trust.
• Affordable and safe(Glaxo smithpledged to produce products that are affordable and available, address health needs
using science and technology and become a modern employer ) medicines gives priority to the most important
stakeholder, ie the patient while also strengthening the company’s product portfolio.
• Another important issue is Sustainable sourcing. Drug development and production that minimize waste, decrease
the use of potentially hazardous substances, and increase safety for workers and the environment ensures business
continuity, and our well being as well as that of our environment.
• Similarly, environmental management Affects the footprint of the operations and compliance to legal and
environmental norms.
• Employee safety is another important issue as the pharma industry employees are  routinely exposed to chemicals
in the workplace as part of their job. Ensuring their safety and well being goes a long way and impacts the
productivity , profitability and growth of the organization
• Potentually hazardous substances?
• production processes, sewage and waste-water treatment plants. contamination by pharmaceuticals of soil and sludge
through emissions from
• Employee safety issues?
• General health hazards in the manufacture of pharma products include: dust and noise exposures, repetitive motion disorders,
exposure to formaldehyde, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
• Dust becomes airborne during manufacture and is a problem for operators; in addition, filling and packaging of the finished
product may pose an allergic hazard from dust.
• Ensuring sterility of the product often involves exposure to formaldehyde and ultraviolet radiation. Formaldehyde may cause
lung cancer, Hodgkins disease, and prostate cancer.
• Ultraviolet lamps used to maintain sterility pose a problem too. Although non-ionising (meaning the radiation does not have an
electrical charge and therefore causes less damage to cells), ultra-violet radiation is dangerous and can cause skin cancer.
• The constant repetitive motion associated with packaging and filling could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome or tendinitis.
Tendinitis is most commonly caused by repetitive and twisting hand motions. Tendinitis symptoms usually are pain and
tenderness in the affected area – hand, wrist, or forearm. Swelling can also be a symptom. The ability to use the hand is often
greatly reduced, with exertion only causing greater pain.
• Affects footprints of the operations and environmental and legal norms?
QUESTIONS

• One of the main threats is that discharging antibiotics into the environment can promote the natural
development of antibiotic-resistant pathogens that are harder to treat.
• Environment, Health, and Safety. You also might also see it spelled as “SHE” or “HSE.”
Ultimately, EHS is a system of processes, plans, standards, laws, and regulations that
aim to protect the safety of the environment, workers, and the general public
• It has become industry norm and statutory requirement for the manufacturing industry to
adhere to the laws and guidelines pertaining to EHS laid down by relevant regulatory
bodies. More than anything else, EHS is critical to ensure safety and comply with Good
Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
COMPANIES

• Novo Nordisk- As with other pharma firms, it expends large amounts of energy, water
and raw materials when producing injection pens and medication. By moving away from
the linear economy and focusing on its Circular for Zero strategy, it will re-use, recycle
and re-purpose products where possible
• Merck & Co-analyses the lifecycle impact of products, finds ways to use raw materials
efficiently and has made a commitment to keep global water use at 2015 levels or lower.
KPIS AND TARGETS

2.Affordable and innovative medicines

1.Product Quality
• KPI 1: The number of rejected batches in productions • KPI :The Average price of the most commonly used
drugs.
• KPI 2: The number of complaints received/side • Target :Reduce the overall cost of production of
effects/product defects and deviations medicine

• Target 1: Reduce the no of rejected batches to NIL
• Target 2: 100% quality in products with no side 3.Sustainable sourcing
effects/product defects
• KPI: Sustainability score of all the suppliers and
vendors
•  Target: Reduce the no unreliable suppliers and
vendors

KPIS AND TARGETS

4.Environmental management 5.Employee health and safety:

a) Waste management
• KPI: Amount of Hazardous and Non-hazardous waste
a)KPI: Number of work-related diseases / accidents
generated and processed occurring in a year
b)Target: To reduce this number to NIL
• Target: To make the difference between the amount of
waste generated and processed nil
b) Water management
• KPI: Amount of water used per unit output
• Target: To reduce the amount of water used per unit output
by a desired %
c) Carbon emissions
• KPI: Total Greenhouse Gas emission by the company in a
year
• Target: Become carbon neutral/ negative by 2030.
ACTION PLAN

• Green Chemistry
• The application of green chemistry principles
• To reduce both the environmental impact of business and the potential negative health effects of chemicals.

• Internal Water Price and Alternate Water

• Set internal price of water based on calculations of water and cost savings
• Using more surface water instead of ground water sources

• Sustainable Procurement Program

• Suppliers complete an assessment by a recognized provider of business sustainability ratings for global
supply chain
ACTION PLAN

• Plastic Neutrality and Circularity

• Minimize plastic waste generation at source
• Maximize plastic waste reuse and recyclability throughout value chain

• Community Level initiatives

• Women and Child health
• Youth upskilling
