Creating

LAN cable
three basic Network Categories

• Local Area Network

• Metropolitan Area
Network
• Wide Area Network
LAN Cable

• used to connect two (2) devices

• the medium through which
information usually moves from
one network device to another
GROUP
ACTIVITY
Straight-through cables
• Out of the 8 pins that exist on both ends of an Ethernet cable,
each pin connects to the same pin on the opposite side
• primarily used for connecting unlike devices.
• 568A (standard)
• allows compatibility with certain telephone hardware- while
• 568B
• Does not allow compatibility with certain telephone
hardware- while
A straight-through cable is typically
used in the following situations:

• Connecting a router to a hub

• Connecting a computer to a
switch
• Connecting a LAN port to a
switch, hub, or computer
Straight through cable

• This kind of wiring diagram is part of the 568A

standard.
Crossover cables
• similar to straight through
cables, except that they have
pairs of wires that crisscross
• This allows for two devices to
communicate at the same time

Unshielded twisted pairs

• also called a category 5 (Cat 5) cable,

carries the broadband signals between your
modem, router, computer, and other wired
Internet-capable devices. Ethernet cables
are capable of accommodating the speeds
associated with all levels of Internet service.
wire stripper

•use to remove the outer

jacket of the wire
RJ45
• RJ45 is the eight wire connector used to connect the computers to
CAT5 UTP cables in a network

• RJ45. An 8-pin/8-position plug or jack is

commonly used to connect computers onto
Ethernet-based local area networks (LAN).
• Two wiring schemes–T568A and T568B–
are used to terminate the twisted-pair
cable onto the connector interface.
Crimping tool

• use to crimp UTP cable to RJ45 connector.

• A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two
pieces of metal by deforming one or both of them
in a way that causes them to hold each other. The
result of the tool's work is called a crimp. A good
example of crimping is the process of affixing a
connector to the end of a cable.
LAN TESTER

• LAN tester used to test if the cable is properly done

and can control the network
• A cable/lan tester is a device that is used to test the
strength and connectivity of a particular type of
cable or other wired assemblies. There are a
number of different types of cable testers, each
able to test a specific type of cable or wire (some
may be able to test different types of cables or
wires)
How to create
LAN cable
Strip your Cable.

• Use your cable

strippers at about
1-2 inches from
the end of the
cable to remove
the outer jacket.
Untwist the twisted pair wires
all the way back to the jacket.
• This can be
done just like a
regular twist-
tie on a loaf of
bread, but with
four of them of
different
colors.
Align the untwisted wires in the
order necessary for your needs.
• For this scenario,
you'll be making a
straight-through
cable, which has
both ends of the
cable with the same
alignment of wires,
so it's easy enough
to do.
Cut the extra wire.

• Once you've untwisted the

wires, you'll have a
superfluous amount of copper
wiring left; we don't need this
much, but it's good to have it
in the previous step to help in
aligning the colors properly.
Use the wire-cutting scissors
to cut these off.
Push the remaining wires into
the RJ45 head.
• Be careful not
to bend the
wires while
pushing them
in or you run
the risk of
creating a bad
cable
• Double-check
that the wires
are all the way
up into the gold
pins of the head
and made it up
in the proper
order.
• Push the
head into the
open space of
the crimping
tool and
squeeze it
closed, hard.
Open the crimping tool and remove
your newly-crimped Ethernet
connector.
Repeat the crimping process on the
other side of the cable if you're
making a completely new cable.
• Plug one end of the
cable into the tan,
two-port end of the
cable tester, and the
other end into the
other part of the
tester with the
graphic display
window.
