INTRODUCTION
 An Electrical energy requires to fulfill the
requirements of the circuits of a vehicle and to
keep the battery fully charged.

 Generator/ alternator is a device which

converts mechanical energy from the
automobile engine into electrical energy.
AIM
To inculcate the knowledge of the
functioning of Alternator.
REQUIREMENT

To supply the current for operation of

electrical devices.
To keep the battery fully charged.

ESTABLISHMENT

Alternator is usually mounted on the side of

the engine block.
ALTERNATOR PRINCIPLE
 ALTERNATOR IS DEVICE WHICH
CONVERTS MECHANICAL ENERGY OF
ENGINE INTO ELECTRICAL ENERGY.

 IT WORKS ON THE PRINCIPLE OF

FARADAY’S LAW OF
ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ALTERNATOR AND DYNAMO
In DC generator, the conductor rotates in a
stationary magnetic field & current flow in the
same direction.
In A.C. generator or alternator, the magnetic
field rotates & the conductor remain
stationary.
Current flow first on one direction & then in
other alternately.
DYNAMO
It consists of pole pieces in a frame armature,
commutator and field winding.

Poles pieces or shoes laminated iron cores for

the field winding to furnish the magnetic field
for the generator.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
Theory of faraday's Law of Electromagnetic
Induction.

WORKING PARTS
ROTOR
 Rotor is mounted on shaft & supported by the
ball bearing.
Consist of a circular field coil encased by two
end pole pieces.
Each pole piece have six protruding fingers
spaced 60 degree angle.
The fingers are alternately spread to provide
12 poles i.e. six north & six south poles.
ROTOR
SLIP RINGS & CARBON BRUSHES

End of the field coils are connected to the slip

rings.
Each slip ring connect to one end of winding.
The carbon brushes makes sliding contact with
the slip rings.
The current is taken out to external circuit
through brushes.
STATOR
 Consist of an internally slotted & laminated
iron core around which three phases of
winding.

 One each is connected to a common y-

junction.

 Other end is connected to rectifier plate/ heat

sink plate.
STATOR
RECTIFIER
To change the alternating current into direct
current, there are six silicon diode rectifier
used.
Diode is an electric device that permit current
to flow in the one direction.
There are two types of rectifiers i.e. positive
rectifier negative rectifiers & auxiliary
rectifier.
RECTIFIER
• DC current is flow through positive diode to battery
terminal whereas negative are grounded.
ELECTRONIC VOLTEGE REGULATOR
• Prevents the alternator from producing
excessive voltage.
• The regulator limits the current flow through
the field winding on the rotor.
• This controls the strength of rotating magnetic
field.
The strength of current depends upon the
following factors

– STRENGTH OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD

– SPEED AT WHICH MAGNETIC FIELD

ROTATES
– NUMBER OF LOOPS
