Sources of Timber

Products in Caraga Region

A Gis-Based Mapping

Randolf M. Francisco, Bsae V

Introduction

 Caraga Region is blessed with

its natural forest products
within its vast forest land area.
One of the most usable forest
products are the different types
of logs species which occurs in
many sizes and wood
structures.
A Forest Product
Introduction..

 These logs that come from forests

are one of the sources of living of
the people especially those who are
living in barangay areas.

 These logs are cut down and

transported through trailer trucks
to the timber companies for
processing.
Introduction..

 One known type of logs which are

purposely planted are the type that is
called “ Falcata”, these logs are
purposely planted to be sold in
market with its high selling price.

 This type of logs is fast growing and

lightweight one for easy
transportation.
Introduction..

 Every day large volumes of

logs are being delivered to wood
processing companies.

 The logs are usually coming

from barangay areas and
delivered to Butuan City.
Review of Related Literature

 A tree is a perennial woody

plant. It is most often defined as
a woody plant that has many
secondary branches supported
clear of the ground on a single
main stem or trunk with clear
apical dominance.

Review of Related Lit..
Trees are an important component of
the natural landscape because of their
prevention of erosion and the provision
of a weather-sheltered ecosystem in and
under their foliage.

They also play an important role in

producing oxygen and reducing carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as
moderating ground temperatures.
Review of Related Lit..

 Wood from trees is a building

material, as well as a primary
energy source in many
developing countries.
Review of Related Lit..

 According to DENR R-13

report, 52% of the nationwide
demand of logs is sourced from
the region; while about 86% of
the region’s Log Production
consists of plantation-grown
tree species.

Objective

 The purpose of this research is to

make a map showing the places
where most number of logs come
from in Caraga Region.
 To determined picture of Timberland
area of Caraga Region through
Arcview Mapping.
 To show in the map the total volume
of timber products which are saw
logs, veneer and pulpwood.
Significance of the Study
 The determination of the volumes of
logs is a sign cut trees in our
environment that calls for tree planting.
 At the global level, trees and forests
are closely linked with weather
patterns and also the maintenance of a
crucial balance in nature.
 Hence, the 'task of environment
protection is a universal responsibility
of all of us
Research Methodology

The study used GIS software known as

ARCVIEW 3.2.
The research covered the area of
Caraga Region
Available data where gathered from
DENR- Caraga, Butuan City. The data is
consists of maps of timberland and the list
of the volumes of logs from the four
provinces which are the Agusan del Norte,
Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and
Surigao del Sur.
Flow Process
The data are being inputted in attribute
table in arcview.

Results and Discussion
 After inputting the data in arcview,
the map shows that province of
Agusan del Sur has the largest
volumes of logs generated through
year end 2010.

 And the Cenro San Francisco is the

largest contributor in Agusan del
Sur.
PRF-Private registered

EO 23, entitled “Declaring a
moratorium on the cutting and
harvesting of timber in the national
and residual forests and creating the
Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force,” was
issued in light of widespread
flooding and landslides in Mindanao,
Eastern Visayas and Bicol where
scores of people have died and were
displaced.
 The President earlier
said illegal logging
continues to be the main
culprit of landslides in
these areas that cause
