LLF14 DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

TIPS FOR ASSIGNMENT 1


ASSIGNMENT 1 QUESTIONS
 Choose ONE question from a choice of four topics: (Refer to IA page 22)

 1) The person you admire the most.(Describing a person).


 OR
 2) An object of value in your family (Describing an object).
 OR
 3) Your village or town (Describing a place).

 4) The saddest moment in your life (Describing an experience)


DESCRIBING A PLACE
 Introduction
 Brief information on the name & location of the place or history.
 State reason for choosing to describe it.
 Outline how the description will unfold.

 Body
 Both general and specific details about the place.
 Describe its surroundings
 Appeal to the senses as you use a narrative: What do you see above, around, beside the place? What do you
hear? What can you smell in the air? Touch? Taste?

 Conclusion
 Express your feelings or opinion concerning the place (village, town).
DESCRIBING AN OBJECT
 Introduction
 Make a general statement (GS) about the importance of the object.
 Explain what is the object and why are you choosing to describe it.
 Body
 5 parts of describing an object (see next slide). The number of parts
may depend on the object.
 Conclusion
 Reflect on why it has been in your family for a very long time.

paragraph lacks the
descriptive devices.
DESCRIBING A PERSON
 Introduction
 Make a general statement about the person and why you choose to
describe this person. Give an outline of essay.
 Body
 Two main parts: Physical description & Personality traits
 Conclusion
 Say why this person in your friend
DESCRIBING AN EXPERIENCE
 Introduction
 Make a general statement about the experience
 Establish the setting (Where and when)

 Body
 Description of the narrative (trip).

 Conclusion
 Reflect on the trip and say why it was memorable
STYLE
 Focus of assessment: Ability to use words or phrases that appeal to
sensory details and the use of literary devices to create images. Grammar
is also marked.
 Tone: Semi-formal. You can use personal pronouns and contractions but
not too many.
 Submission: The essay is to be typed and saved as a word document under
your full name and ID number.
 Font type: Times New Roman & Size: 12 Space: 1.15 lined space
 Pages: Title page; Essay; Reference if you used ideas from another source.
SUMMARY
 Literary devices can be found all around us: songs, advertisements, movies,
books, poems, and so on
 Choose ONE question for assignment 1.
 Create a title for each one.
 The essay is 500-600 words long and must be typed and uploaded on Moodle.
 Save under full name and ID and word document using Times New Roman
font size 12 in 1.15 spaced lines.
 Due Friday 2nd April at 11:55pm. Drop box will close at this time.
