WHERE CAN YOU FIND

ROBOTS TODAY?
ROBOTS IN THE INDUSTRY
In the 1980s the automotive industry
employed robots in their factories to help
factory operators. But unlike in novels
and plays the industrial robots do not
resemble a human except that they have
arms and hands.
ROBOTS IN THE INDUSTRY

Robots were initially used to

perform precise welding chores
and other repetitive tasks such as
spray painting and assembling
cars as they roll down assembly
line.
ROBOTS IN THE INDUSTRY

By using robots to weld, handle dangerous objects and place items,

auto manufacturers were able to ensure a consistent product with a
minimum of worker injury. Currently, 50 percent of all robots in use today
are used in automobile manufacture.
ROBOTS IN THE INDUSTRY

Today you will find robots where it is dangerous

for humans to go. In real life robots are made to help
humans. You can find robots going near a bomb and
deactivating it. Robots are sent to the edges of active
volcanoes, transport toxic materials, go down to the
ocean floor or being sent to Mars

vehicle powered entirely by thermal energy, a completely renewable

resource. This robot is used to explore the bottom of the sea

ROBOTS IN THE SCHOOL

Robots can be found in

schools as tool to learn
mathematics, engineering,
science and programming.
ROBOTS IN ENTERTAINMENT

Robots are used to entertain people. This

tiny toy robot is called I-Sobot, it stands 6.5
inches tall or 16.5 centimeters. It can walk,
play guitar, dance the hula perform 200 other
moves. It has 17 miniature servo motors and
can be controlled via remote or simple voice
commands.
ROBOTS EXPLORING OTHER PLANET

Curiosity is a car-sized robotic rover

exploring Gale Crater on Mars as part of
NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory
mission (MSL).
ROBOTS TODAY

You may have known by now that robots need not look like humans.
However, robots mimic the capabilities of humans. Man has a brain, a
robot has its microprocessor where it can process information and send
messages to the rest of the body.
ROBOTS TODAY

Robots have arms and hands to pick up objects and bring them to other
locations. It also has a torso which all of its components can be connected.
Most robots use legs or wheels to travel. Robot use sensors to have its
own set of eyes and ears to be able to sense its environment.
AUTONOMOUS ROBOT

What is an Autonomous Robot?

An autonomous robot is a mobile computer that is capable of

interacting with the environment through sensors and actuators
in order to perform various intelligent task without constant
attention from humans.
AUTONOMOUS ROBOT
Who made the first real Autonomous Robot?

Dr. Grey Walter was a neurologist, robotics pioneer, and a bit of a mad
scientist living in Bristol, England in 1949, without the aid of modern day
computer processor, he built the first reactive, autonomous robots that could
wander about and avoid obstacle. Each robot had two simulated neurons,
sufficient for them to display complex behavior. Significantly, Walters
tortoises represent the first real works demonstration of artificial life

“The Tortoise”
COMPONENTS

• Sensors are input devices connected to a robot that is capable of

gathering data on its environment much like a human’s senses such as
eyes, ears and touch.

• Actuators are steering mechanism which allows your robot to move and
turn.
