Implementation of AR in Educational System To Support Specially Abled Students
Implementation of AR in Educational System To Support Specially Abled Students
Differently abled children with sensory deprivation view traditional method of education as
a hindrance towards a bright future secured with proficient education for a strong
foundation. Such students lack a suitable alternative or alternatives towards education and
the only mode available on a large scale is the one that has been moderated keeping an
average physically sound student in mind. Special children like such students find a hard
time to avail a better option for education that is moderated towards their needs.
This is where AR comes in as augmented reality has the capability to overcome the
challenges of lack of senses of the differently abled as augmented reality offers them with
options or ability to overcome the hurdles of normal learning with interactive environment
so that differently abled children can progress with the rest of the world with a solid
educational foundation.

Why AR is a better option in general?
Modern technology can be suitably harnessed to motivate and engage children in interactive
learning activities in order to promote their cognitive and social skills. Among new age
technologies, augmented reality has a special ability to catch children’s imagination and promote
attention, within safe and fascinating environments. Augmented reality for special needs learning
can be utilized at different speeds and locations, and never lose patience with the frequent
repetition that many of these learners desire.
Augmented reality is a variation of virtual environments, but has a few added advantages for
special needs learning and hence provides the greatest benefit as learners remain part of the
world around them and learn easily.
The exponential growth of the use and availability of smartphones and tablets, combined with the
decrease in acquisition costs of these devices, make a suitable learning tool for special needs
children. These multi-purpose devices when allowed in educational support can be useful
especially for the development of socialization skills in special needs children .

AR Tools
▪ Vuforia is an augmented reality software development kit (SDK) for mobile devices that
enables the creation of augmented reality applications. It uses computer vision
technology to recognize and track planar images and 3D objects in real time. This image
registration capability enables developers to position and orient virtual objects, such as
3D models and other media, in relation to real world objects when they are viewed
through the camera of a mobile device. The virtual object then tracks the position and
orientation of the image in real-time so that the viewer's perspective on the object
corresponds with the perspective on the target. It thus appears that the virtual object is a
part of the real-world scene.
▪ The Vuforia SDK supports a variety of 2D and 3D target types including ‘markerless’
Image Targets, 3D Model Target, and a form of addressable Fiducial Marker, known as a
VuMark. Additional features of the SDK include 6 degrees of freedom device localization
in space, localized Occlusion Detection using ‘Virtual Buttons’, runtime image target
selection, and the ability to create and reconfigure target sets programmatically at
6 runtime.

More about Unity
▪ Unity gives users the ability to create apps and experiences in both 2D and
3D, and the engine offers a primary scripting API in C#, for both the Unity
editor in the form of plugins, and apps themselves, as well as drag and
drop functionality. Within 2D environment apps, Unity allows importation of
sprites and an advanced 2D world renderer. For 3D environment apps,
Unity allows specification of texture compression and resolution settings
for each platform that the application engine supports, and provides
support for bump mapping, reflection mapping, parallax mapping, screen
space ambient occlusion (SSAO), dynamic shadows using shadow maps,
render-to-texture and full-screen post-processing effects.
▪ This makes Unity very suitable for designing interactive environment based
applications.

Uses of the tools combined
• Vuforia and unity is the most common combination used in the development of AR
projects.
• It is also used for processing the image target and showing the output simultaneously.
