What Is Leadership?

YOUR VIEWS PLEASE !!

Leadership

 Not a Dictionary Word till about 1800 !

 Evolved as a Science of Management

Few Leadership Definitions:

 “Leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less."

 John C Maxwell : Leadership Guru and author of books like, 21 irrefutable Laws of Leadership, 360 degree
leadership, Leadership Gold etc.

 “Leadership happens any time you are trying to influence

the thoughts and actions of another individual to
accomplish specific tasks or goals.”
 Ken Blanchard, Leadership Guru and Author, The One minute Manager, Lead
Like Jesus etc

 "The only definition of a leader is someone who has

followers.” Peter Drucker
Lets us Create

A DEFINITION BASED on the previous slides

 A simple definition of leadership is that

leadership is the art of influencing /motivating
a group of people to act towards achieving a
common goal.
THINK:

REMEMBER & IDENTIFY

Three most memorable Leaders

WRITE DOWN
Having defined and identified
Leaders and Leadership…..
 Is it a Biblical term?

 Search your bible….

 A few Biblical Perspectives on Leadership..

Few Biblical Perspectives:

 “ Words like “management” may be 20th century

terms, yet the human skills needed for effective
managerial leadership are as ancient as the
Old testament itself. Nehemiah, a post exile leader, exemplifies
effective managerial skills and provides a good case study. Nehemiah
planned, organized, motivated and exercised leadership over the people in
and around Jerusalem ” Anthony D`souza- (Being a
Leader, Bombay, 1998,7).
Few Biblical Perspectives:

 “ Down the centuries church leaders have continued to

study the Gospels to discover patterns of
leadership development to be applied in their
context. Yet the words `leader` and leadership do
not appear in the Gospels. Infact, Jesus says
surprisingly little to his disciples about their future role
as leaders. - David Bennett in his book
Metaphors of Ministry
Could it be that…
 Leadership has more to do with learning to
follow than to learning to command?

 Effective leadership depends on Right Attitudes

than on mastery of certain skills ?

 It is important to understand commonality with

followers than to focus on what sets the leader
apart from the group?
Different Perspective

 Can Our Leadership Definitions be as same

as of the World??

 John Stott defines Christian Leadership as..

 Leadership- Concept shared by the church and the
World
 Christian and Non Christian Understanding Non Identical
 Models of Secular Management to be exposed to critical
Christian scrutiny
Christian Paradigm of Leadership!

 As Proposed by our Lord

 “… Not so with you…wants to become

great… must be a servant….slave of all……
Son of Man ….not come to be served, but to
serve….” Mark 10:42-45
Christian Leadership is…

 Not a synonym for Lordship or Masters but

Servants and Slaves
 Not the Authority of Ruler- leader but the
Humility of Servant leader
 Not by power But Love
 Not Force but Example
 Not coercion but reasoned persuasion
 - John Stott : “A Call for Christian Leadership” 1984 :
335-336
Qualitative Definition in the Biblical
Context
 A LEADER is a person with God given
capacity and with a God given responsibility
to INFLUENCE a specific group of God`s
people towards God`s purposes for the
Group
 – John W Kirkpatrick , Guidleines for Leadership 1992.
CASE STUDIES

 Contrast and Qualify this:

 Exodus 1: 15- 20
 Exodus 2: 11- 15

 Who is a leader in this scenario?

 What Qualifies them to be a leader?
MORE CASE STUDIES

 Identify the Type of Leader:

 CASE I 2 Kings 5:16

 CASE II 1 Samuel 26: 1-11

 CASE III Philemon vs. 10,11

Lets Review

 Your inputs on the case studies…..

 Leadership is Positional or Attitude based?

 Leaders are Born(BNL) or Made?

 – “ be not afraid of greatness! Some are born great,
Some achieve greatness and some have greatness
thrust upon them” Shakespeare ( Twelfth Night)
 Who Qualifies to be a Leader?
Biblical Patterns of Leadership

 The Imagery of Father

 2 Kings 5:13 Naaman; 2Kings 6:21,13:14 Elisha; Judges
17:10,18:19 Young Levite invited to be priest
 The Imagery of Shepherd
 Psalms 23, Ezek 34: 2-5,10, 11-16, Acts 20:28, 1Peter 5:2,
Christ the Chief shepherd Heb13:20, 1Pt 2:25, rev 7:17)
 The Imagery of Servant –Leader
 Mk 10:45, John 13
 The Imagery of Steward
 1Cor 4:2-4, Titus!:7
As Christian Leaders we
have a role as “Pastors” /
“Shepherds” to guide our
people through the process
of Transformation and put
them on the path of growth
KEY SCRIPTURES

remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with
(
what I teach everywhere in every church 1 Cor 4:16-17 )

 The Word became flesh … full of grace and truth.
(John1:14)

Here lies Christ Jesus have
SELF crucified the sinful
nature with its passions
I no longer live
and desires ”

Roles of a Leader:

 Challenging the Process

 Inspiring a Shared Vision
 Enabling others to Act
 Modeling the Way
 Encouraging the heart

 Kouzes and Posner (1987)

VISION

 A vision is a clear picture of what the leader

sees his group being or doing.
 From this clear picture the leader plans
how the vision will become reality.
 Having vision is not enough, there must be
a commitment to act on the vision –
Mission.
 There must be set of measurable steps to
achieve the mission – Goals.
VISION COMES FROM GOD.

 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from

above, and comes down from the Father of
Lights with whom there is no variation or
shadow of turning.” James 1:7
Visionary Leaders:

 God gave Noah – the vision of an Ark and he built

it.
 God gave Abraham - the vision of a city and he
looked for it.
 God gave Nehemiah - the vision of wall and he
repaired it.
 God gave Paul the Apostle - the vision to
evangelize the whole world and he did cover the
earth with the message of Christ.
VISIONARY LEADERS:

Nehemiah

WANTED: CHRISTIAN LEADERS

 "The church at this moment needs men who feel themselves expendable in the
warfare of the soul.

 Such men will be free from the compulsions that control weaker men : the lust of
the eyes, the lust of the flesh, the pride of life.

 They will not be forced to do things by the squeeze of circumstances.

 Their only compulsion will come from within and from above.

 This kind of freedom is necessary if we are going to have prophets in our pulpits
again instead of mascots.

 These free men will serve God and man from motives too high to be understood by
the rank and file who today shuffle in and out of the sanctuary.

 They will make no decision out of fear, they will take no course out of a desire to
please, accept no service for financial consideration.

 They will perform no religious act out of mere custom.

 Nor will they allow themselves to be influenced by the love of publicity, or by the
desire for reputation."
