Keyboard
•Standard Input device
•Similar to conventional
typewriter
•Compose about 101 to 114 keys
Keyboard is divided into three major parts
•Function Keys
•Numeric keys
•Alphabetic Numeric Keys
•Special Keys
•Screen Navigation Keys
Keyboard
Function Keys
•12 keys top of the keyboard labeled as F1,F2…..F12
•Programmable key to perform specific function for
different program
•Example: F1 for help
Numeric Key
•Important for entering numeric data
•Switched “ON” of “OFF” by pressing
“NUMLOCK KEY”
•Situated in right side of keyboard
•0 to 9 and + - * / . And enter key are present

Alphabetic Numeric Keys
•Similar to standard typewriter
•Use to enter alphabets and number
•Above alphabetic keys numeric keys and symbols printed
used by shift key
Special Keys
•Situated in between alphanumeric and
Numeric keypad and surrounding of alphanumeric keypad
•Pgup, PgDown, Home, End, Insert, Del
•Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Windows, Esc

•4 arrow keys situated between alphanumeric and numeric
keypad
•Left, Right, up, Down Arrow Keys
•Use to Move cursor anywhere in screen

• Rapidly point and select icon display on screen
• Popular devices are
• Track ball
• Joystick
• Mouse
• Light pen
• Touch screen
• Digitizer
Trackball
• Just like mouse
• One ball instead of button
• Ball to move cursor move toward move of ball
• Neither uses pad nor cover much space

•Pointing device
•Children play games with it
•Handle move the object up, down, left or right in the screen
•Also attach with television set
•It connect USB or special Joystick port supplied with sound

•Pointing device
•User move pointer rapidly on screen with mouse
•Control the movement of cursor position
•Wheel or laser mouse are types

•Contain left, right button and wheel at the middle
•Wheel moves scroll up down rapidly
Laser Mouse
•Laser beam used for movement
•It does not need mouse pad
•Automatically activated as it attached with computer
Light Pen
•Pointing device use for making drawing
•Rapidly moves as ordinary pen
•But Work with electricity
•Does not need any alphabetic keys

Touch Screen
•Capable to touch data directly by using fingers
within the display area
•Simple and easy to use
•Used in mobile phones
Digitizer
•Convert maps, pictures and drawing into digital from and
stores in computers
•Consist of digitizing tablet and stylus (pen)
•Flat surface table which stylus moves to draws shapes, picture
and maps.

Speech Recognition Device
•Allow user to input speech or voice
•Convert human voice to text
•Helpful for disable persons
•Capable to recognize word with help of software and convert into
text or command
Types of speech recognition system
•Single word speech recognition system
•Recognize only single word
•Like “hello”, “yes” or “NO” at one time
Continuous type of words speech recognition system
•Recognize more then one word or complete sentence
•Like “ Hello how are You” at one time

•Especially helpful for disable persons, who cannot write
•Help to those persons who feel comfort to speak rather then to write
•Facilitates user in situation where unable to edit or write long text
•Help to busy user who cannot have time to write long text

Image Scanner
•Translates printed documents into electric form and stores in computer
•Important documents can preserve for later use
•Classified into two types
Flatbed Scanner
•like photocopier having glass sheet
•Also called desktop scanner
•Paper place into glass sheet, light moves and scan the image
•Process repeated to whole sheet scan
Hand-Held Scanner
•Hand-held scanner work like flatbed scanner but
work manually by user
•Scanner drag slowly on paper to scan the image
•Use in shops to scan prices of product
Data Scanning Devices
OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
•Also called optical character reader
•OCR scanner creates image of documents and OCR
software convert it into ASCII text
•Computer interpreted ASCII text as letter, number or
character
OMR (Optical Mark Reader)
•Capable to recognize pre-printed marks by pen
Or pencil
•Helpful for marking objective types questions students
mark the answer sheet by filling circles, oval or square
•Printed answer sheet feed into computer by using OMR

BCR (Bar Code Reader)
•It use in shop, glossary stores
•Contain photo electric cell that reads bar code having thick lines
•Analyze the price of item immediately
MIRC (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition)
•MICR read magnetically encoded characters
•MICR is system that scan printed or hand written characters
•User can data through scanner, which is recognize by engine of OCR
•Convert images into marching readable characters
Electronic card Reader (ECR)
•Scanning e-card / smart card like visa card, credit card etc
•Reads memory card of ATM debit or visa card
•Form of black strip, wiped an ECF machine

Vision Input System
•Latest input device that recognize the vision, image that appears in its
lens
•Especially design for industrial Robots
