Weber's Theory
-This theory assumes that all magnetic
substances are composed of tiny molecular
magnets.
-Any unmagnetized material has the magnetic
forces of its molecular magnets neutralized by
adjacent molecular magnets, thereby
eliminating any magnetic effect.
  A more modern theory of magnetism is
based on the electron spin principle. From
the study of atomic structure it is known that
all matter is composed of vast quantities of
atoms, each atom containing one or more
orbital electrons.
 So now we know that “like” poles repel each
other…
 and that “opposite” poles attract each other.

They do this because there is a

FORCE
between them.
If you try to put two magnets together with
the same poles pointing towards one another,
the magnets will push away from each other.
We say they repel each other.

).
If you put two magnets together with different
poles pointing towards one another, the magnets
will pull towards each other. We say they attract
each other.

In this picture a north and a south pole are pulling

towards each other (attracting each other).
Magnets can attract other
magnets but they can also
attract magnetic materials.

 The angle between the geographic and

magnetic meridians at any place
 Locate the closest compass rose to your
location

  just above its center crosshairs you will find

a label noting the local variation (as of the
stated year) and its name--east or west.

 Just below the crosshairs, you will find a note

of the annual increase or decrease in
variation.
 Take the difference between the year shown
and the current year.

 Multiply this difference by the minutes of

increase or decrease. If increasing, add the
difference to variation.

 If decreasing, subtract the difference. Round

your answer to the closest whole degree of
variation.
 Defined as deflection right or left of the
magnetic meridian.
