Mango House

General Overview Semi-open verandah, with a vernacular feel to its design, opens up to
the garden on the west side.

Mango house by Studio PKA is

located in the quaint coastal town of
Alibag, India, surrounded by a canopy
of lush green trees mostly mango trees
whence the structure gets its name.
Spatial Functions
• Built up area is
approximately
6000 ft².
• The highest point of
the house is 35 feet
at the tip of its
sloped roof.
• The house was
supposed to contain
a family of four.
“ The essence of design here is simplicity in thought and expression through the
form, material and décor of the structure. The organic nature of construction
successfully connects the outside with the inside and thus manages to convey an
earthy feel through its free-flowing plan. The house is a blend of various elements
& building materials that are ‘azonic’, lending simplicity to the design.

- Description by the architects

Spatial Transformation
• The interplay of the
solids and the voids
forms an integral part
of the architectural
composition.
• The mango trees in
the north, south and
east directions
demarcated the
boundary of the
house.
Spatial Quality
• The design approach to be responsive in context with the surrounding trees.
Since mango trees dominated the plot, the house clearly gets its definition
from them to ensure that the basic value of being organic or adopting green
culture was exercised. These 70-80 year old inhabitants of the plot became
the deciding and guiding factors for the design and concept for the house.

• The entrance on all

four sides along both
the north–south &
east-west axes leads to
an uninterrupted view
of the verdant
landscape. the house
blurs the lines
between indoors and
outdoors with its
massive doors and
windows.
• The suspended steel staircase is the reason of
existence of the house as its majestic presence
dominates the interiors. once inside, eyes are drawn
to a suspended steel staircase and double height
spaces not only act as interesting vantage points but
also ensure ventilation across the spaces.

• A skylight here and another over the dining area

underscore the feeling of vastness.
• Creating volume was an important aspect of the
structure and with the sloping roof .This is
emphatically accentuated at the suspended
staircase.
Spatial Sequence
• Mostly horizontal circulation patterns and linear
circulation is
visible because
of the lack of a
lot of floors.

Spatial Perceptions
• Earthy tones of exposed brick and
concrete along with roof which features
red clay Mangalore tiles that complement
the verdant landscape around it entices
the user and invites them to engage with
the house.
• The raindrops trailing down windows,
the dappled reflections of sunlight made
by leafy branches of mango trees provide
much-needed shade, creating a play
between shadow and sunlight on the
decked terrace and outdoor living areas
and the gentle breeze running through the
spaces – all pleasantly add to the
experience and quality of the space.
• The journey through the different
spaces are marked by a defined sense
of transition between them – It could
be as subtle as the sound of footsteps,
on the gravel, following the user till
the threshold, or even the change in
warm hues of the exposed bricks, in
the communal spaces, to white
plastered brickwork, in the private
spaces.
