The Bermuda Triangle

Can the scientific method explain

the vast amount of irregular
disappearances?
The Bermuda Triangle
How can the scientific method
explain the vast amount of
irregular disappearances?
What is the scientific method?

•Investigates an event
•Acquisition of a new knowledge
•Corrects old theories
•Based on observable,
experimentable and measurable
evidence.
Scientific Method
Difference between Scientific Law, Theory and
Hypothesis

Scientific
Theory Hypothesis
Law
- An actual fact
- Describes rather - Subject to
- Yet to be proved
than explain change
- An educated
- True and - Based on a
guess
universal proven hypothesis
- Based on
- A single - Relates to
explanation
mathematical observations
equation
A Scientific Theory

•Logically proven
•Unprejudiced
•Repeatable
•Proved through an unbiased approach
Issues with Scientific Theory

•Subject to change
•They cannot convince anyone who has
a strong belief on something that does
not rest on logical proof or evidence.
Does the Scientific Theory tell the truth?

•It is said to be ‘true’ because it

agrees with experimental evidence.
• It is the best and most logical
explanation we can currently obtain.
The Bermuda Triangle

•A region of dangerous traveling area

which is responsible for the
disappearances of Aircraft and ships
•Area goes from Miami -> Bermuda ->
Puerto Rico -> Miami Thus making a
Triangle (Diagram on Left)
•Bizarre happenings date
back for centuries
•Only in past 50 years
disappearances have
been well documented
•Believed Christopher
Columbus made first
encounter when sailed
in 1492
• His compass went haywire
and is crew claimed to see
lights in the sky
American Airlines Inc
 August 28, 1991
 Airbus drops 1000 feet injuring 30
passengers
Miss Fernandina
 85 foot shrimp trawler
 Lost off Flagler Beach in Miami
April 23 1999 <- Simon’s B-
day :)
 Genesis disappears with no signal
 196 gross tons of steel
Flight 19

•West to Florida
•East to Bahamas
•Islands and the mainland should have
been visible
• If the errors (with compass) were
constant then they would have flown
straight and seen land somewhere
Reasons

•Squad commander was

inexperienced and failed to
follow instructions
• The aircraft were operating
under conditions of deteriorating
weather and visibility and with a
low fuel supply
Magnetic Fields
•Alter compasses
•The Bermuda triangle is one of two
places on earth where compasses
point towards “true north”
• Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
• Similar magnetic fields would alter all
electrical equipment (emitting a
magnetic field) including radios.
Gulf Stream
• Runs swiftly through the area
• Very capable of removing evidence of a disaster and
transporting it many kilometers
• Strong currents over shallow reefs creates fluctuations
• Also the fact there is shoal/reefs around the islands as
well as the deepest marine trenches in the world
• The Caribbean-Atlantic weather is very unpredictable
• Severe storms can spring up and die down again
without satellites picking them up
Methane Gas
• Appropriate conditions for the formation of “methane gas
hydrate” include:
• Areas of permafrost
• Deep sea floor where pressures and temperatures are
ideal for the build up of this substance
• Eruptions can cause frothy water
• no longer capable of the buoyancy required to support a
ship (decreasing the density of water)
• Not as dense as normal air
• Would cause air pockets “Hole in the sky”
• Can also cut out an aircrafts engine
Conclusion
 Scientific method CANNOT be applied
 Not able to test
 No. of disappearances is similar to that
of other high water traffic areas.
 That the scientific method cannot be
applied to the Bermuda triangle is part
of its mystery
