What are the features of Mesopotamian civilization?

  The world's first cities appeared in Mesopotamia and these cities were
Babylon and Eridu.

 The rulers were inscribed in stone.

 Had a polytheistic belief system

 Some of the jobs in ancient Mesopotamia included farming, pottery,

weaving, teachers, astronomers, and livestock raising

 Trading was also a big deal in Mesopotamia

What was the main characteristic of Mesopotamian society?

 Mesopotamian social strata had three main classes; government

officials, nobles and priests were at the top; second was a class
comprised of merchants, artisans, craftsmen and farmers; on the
bottom were the prisoners of war and slaves. Commoners were
considered free citizens and were protected by the law.
Town Planning of Mesopotamian Civilisation

 The Mesopotamian cities fell short in terms of town

planning as compared to the Harappan centres but
followed a uniform pattern nevertheless. ... People
resided in the walled city and the outer town areas.
Houses were constructed along the streets, and each
house had a central courtyard with rooms attached
around it
Architecture of Mesopotamian Civilisation

 Mesopotamian buildings had arches, domes and columns---- these structures

contributed greatly to development in the field of architecture.
Mesopotamian houses were constructed with mud bricks, mud
plaster and wooden doors

 The ziggurats or temple towers were massive puramid-like structures

made from sun-baked bricks. They looked like human-made.
Technology of Mesopotamian Civilization

 Mesopotamian people developed many technologies, among them

metalworking, glassmaking, textile weaving, food control, and water
storage and irrigation.
 They were also one of the first Bronze age people in the world.
 Early on they used copper, bronze and gold, and later they used iron.
 Palaces were decorated with hundreds of kilograms of these very expensive metals.

 Also, copper, bronze, and iron were used for armor as well as for different weapons such as
swords, daggers, spears, and maces.
Religion of Mesopotamian Civilisation

 Mesopotamian religion was polytheistic, with followers worshipping several

main gods and thousands of minor gods. The three main gods were Ea
(Sumerian: Enki), the god of wisdom and magic, Anu (Sumerian: An), the sky
god, and Enlil (Ellil), the god of earth, storms and agriculture and the controller
of fates.
Contribution of Mesopotamian civilisation

 The Mesopotamian Civilisation made numerous contributions to the growth of human

culture.
 The cuneiform script, numeral system, wheeled vehicles and Code of Hammurabi
compromise a few of these contributions. Mesopotamian structures contributed greatly to
development in the field of architecture.
