The individual and society
✣ Society is defined as a lasting social group whose members have
developed organized patterns of relationship through interaction
with each other.
✣ Society exist due to humans’ natural capacity to associate with
others.
✣ With society a person learns how to submit to authorities and
surrender some of his/her freedom in order to attain a peaceful
and harmonious environment.

✣ Social Contact Theory – states that society came to exist
out of people’s desire to have a harmony in society.

✣ Thomas Hobbes – in his claims that man created a


government and surrendered his several rights and
freedom out of fear of death.

✣ John Locke –English philosopher , according to him the
government was created under a social contract and was
given the responsibility to uphold the natural law and
guaranteed the rights proceeding from such law.
✣ Jean Jacques Rousseau – french philosopher, claimed that
the civil society did nothing to ensure the observance od
equality and imposition of individual liberty.
