IMPRISONMENT

During the whole of 1950s,Mandela was the
victim of various forms of repression.
He was banned,arrested and imprisioned.

 Remained for the next eighteen of his
tweenty-seven years in prison
 Widely known as the most significant
black leader in South Africa
 a maximum security prison on a small
island seven kilometres off the coast
near Cape Town.
 While in prison,Mandela was offered a
conditional release which he rejected by
saying, “ Prisoners cannot enter into
contrast. Only free men can negotiate”.
RELEASED

 2nd February 1990


- State President F.W. de Klerk reversed the ban on
the
ANC and other anti-apartheid organisations and
announced that Mandela would shortly be released
from prison
 Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison in
Paarl on 11th February 1990.
 Mandela plunged wholeheartedly into his life’s work
striving to attain the goals he and other had set out
almost four decades earlier.
NEGOTATIONS

 Following Mandela’s release from prison,his returned to
the leadership of the ANC
 Between 1990-1994,led the party in the multi-party
negotations that led to the country’s first multi-racial
elections
 1n 1991,the ANC held its first national conference in
South Africa after its urbanning,electing Mandela as
President of the organisation.
 His old friend and collague Oliver Tambo,who had led
the organisation in exile during Mandela’s
imprisonment,became National Chairperson
