RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

Vansh Gupta
Class- 9th D, Roll no. 36
POLLUTION
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that
cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical
substances or energy, such as noise, heat, or light. Pollutants, the components
of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring
contaminants. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source
pollution.
Major forms of pollution include
• Air pollution
• Light pollution
• Noise pollution
• Plastic pollution
• Soil contamination
•  Radioactive contamination
•  Thermal pollution
•  Water pollution
RATE OF MORTALITY IN THE WORLD DUE TO POLLUTION

Mortality Rate

As we can see, the mortality rate in the world is steadily increasing over the years due to global pollution. The top three
countries are:-
• INDIA
• CHINA
• NIGERIA
But for now we are going to focus on:-
RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION
Radioactive pollution occurs when there is a presence or
depositions of radioactive materials in the atmosphere or
environment, especially where their presence is accidental and
when it presents an environmental threat due to radioactive decay.
The destruction caused by the radioactive materials is because of
the emissions of hazardous ionizing radiation (radioactive decay)
like beta or alpha particles, gamma rays or neurons in the
environment where they exist.
Since the substances are characterized by radiation – because there
is a lot of instability of the particles present in the radioactive
materials, it can seriously affect, alter and even destroy plant,
animal, and human life. The extent of damage or danger posed to
the environment depends upon the radioactive material
concentration, the energy emitted by the radiation, proximity of the
radioactive materials to those exposed, and the radiation type.
SOURCES OF RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION
1. Natural sources of radiation: Natural sources of radiation are mentioned below:
• In natural sources of radioactive pollution, atomic radioactive minerals are one among them.
• Cosmic rays possess high energy ionizing electromagnetic radiation.
• Another source of radioactive radiation is naturally occurring radioisotopes. Radioisotopes
are found in soil in small quantity.
• Radioactive elements like radium, thorium, uranium, isotopes of potassium and carbon occur
in lithosphere
2. Anthropogenic sources of radiation: Human activities mentioned below include in sources
of radioactive pollution:
• Nuclear tests
• Nuclear reactors
• Diagnostic medical applications
• Nuclear Wastes
• Nuclear explosions
• Nuclear metal processing
CAUSES OF RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

Causes of Radioactive Pollution are as follows :-

 Nuclear Accidents From Nuclear Energy Generation Plants
 The Use of Nuclear Weapons as Weapons of Mass Destruction
(WMD)
 Use of Radioisotopes
 Mining
 Spillage of Radioactive Chemicals
 Tests on Radiation
 Cosmic Rays and Other Natural Sources
 Nuclear Waste Handling and Disposal
 Defensive Weapon Production
EFFECTS OF RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

Effects of Radioactive Pollution:-

 Genetic Mutations
 Diseases
 Soil Infertility
 Cell Destruction
 Burns
 Effects on Wildlife
 Effects on Plants
 Effects on Marine life
