NATIONAL ARTISTS FOR
LITERATURE
FRANCISCO ARCELLANA
Year of Conferment: 1990
• Writer, poet, essayist, critic, journalist, and
teacher
• Pioneered Modern Filipino Short Stories
in English
• His short stories are written in lyrical
prose-poetic form
• His works are now an indispensable part of
a tertiary-level-syllabi all over the country.
EDITH L. TIEMPO
Year of Conferment: 1999
• poet, fictionist, teacher and literary critic
• Her literary works are often described as a
remarkable fusion of style and
substance.
• Recipient of the Carlos Palanca Memorial
Awards for Literature for the short story.
• Founder of the Silliman University
National Writers Workshop- Asia’s
longest running writer’s workshop held in
the city of Dumaguete
BIENVENIDO LUMBERA
Year of Conferment: 2006
• a poet, librettist, and scholar
• He introduced to Tagalog literature what is
now known as Bagay poetry, a landmark
aesthetic tendency that has helped to change
the vernacular poetic tradition
• He pioneered the creative fusion of fine arts
and popular imagination.
VIRGILIO S. ALMARIO
Year of Conferment: 2003
• He is also known as Rio Alma.
• a poet, literary historian, and critic
• revived and reinvented traditional Filipino
poetic forms, even as he championed
modernist poetics.
• He has translated for theater production
some of the famous plays of Nick Joaquin
and international literary artists such Bertolt
Brecht and Maxim Gorki.
RAMON L. MUZONES
Year of Conferment: 2018
• A Hiligaynon poet, essayist, short story
writer, critic, grammarian, editor,
lexicographer, and novelist who authored
an unprecedented 61 completed novels
• A number of these represent
groundbreaking “firsts’ in Hiligaynon
literature
• He also enriched Hiligaynon literature’s
dramatis personae.

PABLO S. ANTONIO
Year of Conferment: 1976
• He is one of the leaders in modern
Philippine architecture.
• Modest and functional
architecture- use of clean, smooth
lines and the utility of light and
ventilation.
• His works are simple and
functional.

LEANDRO V. LOCSIN
Year of Conferment: 1990
• He reshaped the urban landscape with a
distinctive architecture reflective of
Philippine Art and Culture.
• His style of floating volumes, and duality of
light and heavy is unparalleled with other
artists.
• With the span of 30 years, he has produced 75
residences and 88 buildings, which include 11
churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48
commercial buildings, 6 major hotels, and an
airport terminal building.

Year of Conferment: 1973
• An architect, teacher, and civic leader;
who is a pioneer and innovator in
Philippine architecture
• Nakpil’s greatest contribution is his
belief that there is such a thing as
Philippine Architecture, espousing
architecture reflective of Philippine
traditions and culture.

Filipino life.
