PANCREATIC

CANCER
WHAT IS PANCREATIC CANCER?

Pancreatic Cancer is a type of cancer

that affects the pancreas, an organ
that lies behind the stomach and in
front of the spine.
TYPES OF PANCREATIC CANCER

1.Exocrine
2.Endocrine
SYMPTOMS OF PANCREATIC CANCER
1.Yellowing of skin and eyes
2.Abdominal Pain
3.Unintended Weight Loss
4.Vomiting
5.Loss of Appetite
6.Itchy Skin
7.Unexpected onset of Diabetes
8.Change in Urine Color
DIAGNOSIS
In order to diagnose pancreatic cancer, physicians will
request a complete physical exam as well as personal
and family medical histories.

In general, when making a pancreatic cancer diagnosis,

physicians pay special attention to common symptoms
such as abdominal or back pain, weight loss, poor
appetite, tiredness, irritability etc.

Several imaging techniques are also there in order to

see if cancer exists and to find out how far it has
spread.
Pancreatic cancer is a very deadly disease also
because it is diagnosed very late or else when
surgery is quit impossible. This increases the chances
of death.
CAUSES OF PANCREATIC CANCER
While it is virtually impossible to tell
what caused a specific person to
develop pancreatic cancer as the exact
cause is unknown. But pancreatic
cancer is fundamentally a disease
caused by damage to the DNA.
STAGES OF PANCREATIC CANCER
After a diagnosis is made, doctors find out
how far the cancer has spread to
determine the stage of the cancer. The
stage determines which choices will be
available for treatment and informs
prognoses. The standard pancreatic
cancer staging method is called the TNM
(Tumor - Node - Metastasis) system.
AJCC: TNM SYSTEM
A staging system is a standardized way in
which the cancer care team describes the
extent that a cancer has spread. The main
system used to describe the stages of cancers
of the pancreas is TNM System
T describes the size of the primary tumor(s),
measured in centimeters (cm), and
whether the cancer has spread within the pancreas
or to nearby organs.
N describes the spread to nearby (regional) lymph
nodes.
M indicates whether the cancer has metastasized
(spread) to other organs of the body.
i) The numbers 0 through 4 indicate increasing
severity.
·ii) The letter X means "cannot be assessed"
because the information is not available.
iii) The letters "is" mean "carcinoma in situ,"
which means the tumor is contained within
the top layers of pancreatic duct cells and has
not yet invaded deeper layers of tissue.

TREATMENT
Surgical Treatment:-
There are 2 general types of surgery used for
pancreatic cancer:

·i) Potentially curative surgery is used when imaging
tests suggest that it is possible to remove all the
cancer.

·ii)Palliative surgery may be done if imaging tests
show that the tumor is too widespread to be
completely removed.
Chemotherapy:-
Chemotherapy is an infamous pancreatic cancer
treatment that is also used for relieving other
types of cancer. Basically through it a person is
given drugs containing powerful chemicals that
attack the tumors associated with pancreatic
cancer. These drugs can be taken orally or shots.
Chemotherapy may be suggested even if it can’t
provide official pancreatic cancer treatment,
since it can help alleviate the symptoms a
person might be suffering.
Radiation Therapy:-
Radiation therapy is a pancreatic cancer
treatment that uses X-rays radiation to kill
the tumors. If X-rays are used, they are
distributed through a high-powered
radiation machine.
