Structural Glazing
WHAT IS GLASS???
“Glass is a hard, fragile and transparent material”
also referred as Super Cool Liquid

Composition : Silica, Sodium Carbonate, Soda Lime, Soda Ash

& Raw Glass (Cullet)
Advantages of Glass

Natural light
Outdoor view
Energy conservation by choosing right glass & process
Strength to weight ratio superior to concrete
Smaller & less costly foundations
Freedom of color, design and shape
High on aesthetics
Meets life & safety requirements
Increases comfort and productivity
No need to re-paint building structures
Let us now look at
various applications of glass
that we see in our daily life
Applications
and also………

Balustrades
Furniture & Table Tops
Mirrors
 Solar Modules
Automotives etc…
Raw glass is generally referred as
Annealed glass / Kaccha glass

It is very fragile & easily breakable into

sharp & dangerous knife like pieces

WITH VARIOUS
PROCESSES
TOUGHENED GLASS

Annealed glass is heated to a temperature of 650

degrees centigrade and rapidly cooled (quenched)
down by uniform blast of air.
The Machinery
The Process
Toughening for Coated Glass
The Process
TOUGHENED GLASS
Advantages
4-5 times stronger than annealed glass
Impact resistant
Breaks into harmless small crystals
Increases resistance to thermal cracks

Disadvantages
Cannot be cut once toughened
Relatively high optical distortion
Breaking pattern

Applications

Glass partitions
Glass doors
Shower cubicles
Shop fronts and many more…
HEAT SOAKED TOUGHENED GLASS

Glass once toughened can break spontaneously without

any warrant. This may be due to possible NiS content in
raw glass. To reduce the probability (98%), glasses are
subjected to temperature of about 280 degrees for few
hours.
It’s a destructive testing method.
HEAT SOAKING MANDATORY IN AUSTRALIA
....... ...“Late last year the Australian Building Codes Board agreed to implement a national test for
impurities in new toughened glass panes by heat soaking them. “This latest achievement will help
stop impure panes of new toughened glass being fitted in tall buildings where sufficient protection
from falling glass, such as balconies or awnings, is not provided.
“From 1 May, a new test for new high-rise glass window panes will be phased in over a 12-month
period to allow industry to adjust.’’

Mr Hinchliffe said from May 1 the Australian

Building Code would be amended to
include the new test provisions. The test,
for glass in all windows more than 5m above floor
or ground level, will become mandatory in
May 2011.......

Applications

Same as toughened glass but where high level of safety

with regard to spontaneous breakage is required.
HEAT STRENGTHENED GLASS

Annealed glass is heated to a temperature of

620 degrees centigrade and gradually cooled down.
HEAT STRENGTHENED GLASS

Advantages
2-3 times stronger than annealed glass
Increases resistance to thermal cracks
Relatively less optical distortion

Disadvantages
Cannot be cut once processed
Breaks in annealed form
Applications

Curtain wall glazing

(reflective glass in specific)
LAMINATED GLASS

Two or more glasses (annealed / tempered) are bonded

together with an interlayer called PVB (Poly Vinyl Butyl)
or Sentry Glass.
The Process
LAMINATED GLASS
Advantages
Makes it shatter proof
Sound reduction
100% protection from UV radiation
Burglary resistant

Disadvantages
Cannot be separated once bonded
Applications

Skylights
Glass railings
Glass floorings
Automotives
Burglary resistant requirements
Double Glazed Units

Two glass panes are separated by aluminium spacer

filled with desiccant (drying agent) and surrounded
by primary sealant such as polyisobutylene.
It is finally sealed with secondary sealant
such as polysulphide / silicon.
These units are commonly referred as
Insulated Glazed Units (IGU) /
Double Glazed Units (DGU)
The Process
EDGE OF A TYPICAL IGU
Double Glazed Units

Advantages
Lowers U value
Sound reduction
Coating at #2 / #3 is protected
Applications

Structural glazing
Curtain wall glazing
Acoustic studios
Bullet-Resistant Glass

Bullet resistant glass (colloquially known as bullet

proof glass) is a type of strong but optically
transparent glass shield that is particularly resistant
to being penetrated when struck by bullets.
It is also known as transparent armour.
Bullet resistant glass is usually manufactured using
polycarbonate thermoplastic &
layers of laminated glass

Glass in the Home
• In the past glass was mainly utilized for windows to allow
some air and light in to rooms.
• Today glass is utilized in the construction of several elements
of exterior and interior architecture.
•  Exterior glass architecture includes facades, display
windows' skylights, skywalks, entrances, revolving doors,
canopies, winter gardens and conservatories. All of which
allow homes to be bathed in natural sunlight with gorgeous
outdoor views.
• Interior glass architecture can be used for staircases,
elevated walkways and even as traditional walls.

From the Books of the Experts
• “What used to be the boundary of material, its
terminus, has become an entryway hidden in
most imperceptible entity. From here on, the
appearance of surfaces and superficies
conceals a secret of transparency, a thickness
without thickness, a volume with out volume,
an imperceptible quantity”- Marc Taylor
