Answer: Blocks or
bricks.
Unspecialized animal cells 1
MS. P. BROOKS
Objectives.
A cell is the basic structural unit of all living things (organisms). Similar to how a
block is the basic unit that makes up a wall.
They are the smallest unit found in an organism
All activities that are carried out by a living organism such as photosynthesis and
respiration are carried out in a cell.
There are generally two types of cells
The animal cell
The plant cell
Parts of an unspecialized animal cell. Draw
this in your books.
Quick self assessment: identifying parts of animal
cells under the light microscope
These are cheek cells as
seen under a light
microscope.
Question: Observe cells
and name three structures A
(parts) of the cell that you
B
can see labelled as A, B,
C
and C.
Parts and function of animal cells.
Part Description. Function.
Cell membrane Surrounds the cell. Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Nucleus Large central round Controls all the activities which takes place in the cell
structure. Contains structures called chromosomes which has information for making
new cells.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance. Where chemical reactions of the cell take place.
The cytoplasm contains several cell structures including: the mitochondria
and vacuoles.
Mitochondrion Tiny cylindrical Place for respiration which releases energy for the cell.
( singular) Mitochondria.
(plural)
structures.
