Kinematics
Description of fluid motion
Eulerian Method
Advantage - it avoids the determination of the
movement of each individual fluid particle for all details
it seeks the velocity and its variation with time t at
each and every location ( ) in the flow field

Lagrangian view - all hydrodynamic parameters are tied

to the particles or elements
Eulerian view - they are functions of location and time.

The integration of the above equations yield the
constants of integration which are to be found from the
initial coordinates of the fluid particles

the solution gives the equations of

Lagrange as

derived from Eulerian method.

Eulerian Method
In a 1–-D flow field, the velocity at a point may be
given in the Eulerian system by u = x + t. Determine
the displacement of a fluid particle whose initial
position is x0 at initial time t0 in the Lagrangian
system.

A two dimensional flow is described in the Lagrangian
system as

Find
(a) the equation of path line of the particle and
(b) the velocity components in Eulerian system.

Path line of the particle is found by eliminating ‘t’

from the equations
