business in the marketplace. Economic

represents a business’s first
responsibility, which is to be
profitable. Being profitable is
the only way for a company to be
able to survive long term, and
benefit society.
Philanthropic
Responsibility
Philanthropic Responsibility
is more than just doing
what is right, but it is
something that holds
true to the company’s
values, to give back to 8
society. Ethical
Responsibility
The ethical layer of the pyramid is
described as doing the right thing,
being fair in all situations and also

CSR

WHAT IS THIS TOPIC ABOUT?

Attempts to undertake a cost-benefit
analysis of CSR is not easy.
 First, some CSR activities incur no costs at
all.

not come at a prohibitive cost.

 Third, socially responsible practices may

create savings and, as a result, increase
profits.
CSR TODAY
CSR is a priority with business.
In addition to a commonsese belief that
companies should be able to “do well by doing
good”, at least three broad trends are driving
business to adopt CSR frameworks:

 The resurgence of envirromentalism 11

 Increasing buyer power

 The globalization of business
