In our society, the justice system has a significant
role in keeping social order, and prisons are an
indispensable part of it. In the past, the purpose of
prisons has been to provide forced containment of
criminals to ensure public safety and to give
unlawful citizens the punishment they are believed
to deserve.

However, this system of inadequate and careless

treatment can have an adverse effect on juveniles,
who at their age have not gained consciousness and
can further become potential law breakers. It is
significant to explore the psychological impact of
prisons on children and how the spaces in juvenile
prisons can lead to rehabilitation of a juvenile
preventing repetition of crimes.
It is believed that people change under the
influence of their environment, community and
culture, and so is valid for children who are
deprived of freedom and placed in prison
INTRODUCTION environments.
What is juvenile delinquency ?

Juvenile Delinquency refers to the antisocial act of children

which are disapproved by the society for which they are
punished by law for further corrective measures to be taken for
their behaviour.

The term Juvenile Delinquency has a very extensive meaning,

including aggressive, rebellious and antagonistic behavior. The
term also includes certain vicious acts like thefts, murder, rape,
truancy, loitering, harassment, gambling, drug dealing etc.

Most often, the crimes that they commit are destruction and
wanton violence, the motive of which is often difficult to
discover. If not checked and corrected in time, the adolescent
juggling between childhood and manhood or womanhood may
indulge in some serious anti-social crimes and grow into a
potential offender.
Causes of juvenile delinquency

• Poverty - Lack of Basic necessities such as clothing and daily meals.

• Negative influence and improper upbringing and lack of education,
• Often, disintegrated family systems, disputes can have long lasting
psychological effects on youngsters.
• Apart from these factors, child labour, abuse, bullying, etc. can lead
to massive increase in juvenile delinquency.

Current conditions

A 2013 report by the Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR), “India’s
Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault In Juvenile Justice Homes", has this to
say: “It will not be an understatement to state that juvenile justice
homes….have become India’s hell holes where inmates are subjected
to sexual assault and exploitation, torture and ill-treatment, apart
from being forced to live in inhuman conditions." The report goes on
to highlight 39 cases of repeated sexual assault on children in juvenile
justice homes, including government-run observation homes,
children’s homes, shelter homes and orphanages. - www.livemint.com

psychology and mental health of the juveniles.

• To Determine how adverse psychological effects of

imprisonment can be addressed through the Built form.

• To give the recommendations for improving the

rehabilitation process after determining conclusion from the
case studies.
HYPOTHESIS
The built environment and spatial

conditions in correctional homes play

substantial roles in aiding successful rehabilitation and
improving the quality of life of juvenile delinquents.

correctional homes affect the rehabilitation process of
juvenile delinquents ?

current conditions of juvenile homes and built
environment affects the life of juveniles.

• Analysing the  juvenile justice system of India and design

standards will facilitate the approach towards solutions.

primary study facilitated via actual site visits and one-on-
one comprehensive interviews may be restricted to on-call
interviews .

• An Increased dependency on the secondary resources for

data collection.
