Text: John 5:17
“But Jesus answered
them, My Father
worketh hitherto, and I
work.”
Introduction
When God wants to do His work on
earth, He calls a man to do it. He
equips a man, and tests that man.
Jesus before venturing into his ministry
was allowed by God to go through SOP
(Standard Operating Procedure)
I. HIS DEFERENCE
1. Respect: polite respect, especially
putting another person’s interest first
2. Submission: submission to the
judgment, opinion, or wishes of
another person (Encarta)
I. HIS DEFERENCE
A. Jesus did not mind the Distance
Matthew 3:13
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to
Jordan unto John, to be baptized of
him.
- Galilee to Jordan 105 kilometers
I. HIS DEFERENCE
B. Jesus did not mind the Degree
Matthew 3:14-15 cf. Philippians 2:5-8
14 But John forbade him, saying, I have need to
be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it
to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill
all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

C. Jesus did mind the His Father’s Declaration
Matthew 3:16-17 cf. John 17:4
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up
straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens

beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4:1-11
B. It is more than Prominence (Pride of Life) Matthew 4:5-7
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on
a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down:
for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and
in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy
foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the
Lord thy God.
II. HIS DEVOTION Matthew
4:1-11
C. It is more than Pleasure (Lust of the Eyes) Matthew 4:8-10
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain,
and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of
them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall
down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is
written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt
thou serve.
