Political fake news and disinformation shot up by
61% between December 2018 and January 2019. Of
109 problematic items identified this January, 58 were
political in nature, with the latest Mafindo data from
February further indicating an increasing escalation.
In December there were 88 items of fake news, of
which 36 were political in nature.

Information Technology found 800,000 websites that
were responsible for spreading fake news and hate
speech. In spite of the aggressive efforts by the
government to take down the websites, they persist.
In a year, a fake-news website can generate hundreds
of millions of rupiah by attracting millions of users to
the page.
