Electrical Hazards
Electrical Risks
BE SAFE:
• Burns
• Electrocution
• Shock
• Arc flash/arc blast
• Fire
• Explosions
Electrical Risks :Burns
• Most common shock-related injury
• Three types of electrical burns:
– Electrical Shock
– Arc flash
– Thermal contact

Source:
OSHA
Electrical Risks :Electrocution

• Is Fatal
• Meaning: to kill with electrical shock
• Results when a human is exposed to a lethal amount
of electrical energy
Electrical Risks :Electrocution
Electrical Risks : Shock
Might be fatal ( electrocution) or less effect( …….)

• Body becomes part

of electrical circuit
• Reflex response to
passage of electric
current through the body
Electrical Risks :Arc Flash/Arc Blast
• Arc flash
• Sudden release of electrical energy
• Gives off thermal radiation (heat) and bright, intense light
Temperatures as high as 35,000°F
Electrical Risks : Fire
• Most result from problems with "fixed wiring & Overloading”
• Problems with cords, plugs, receptacles, and switches also
cause electrical fires
Electrical Risks :Explosions
• Occur when electricity ignites explosive mixture of material in the air

• Ex1. - Electrical Spark in Gas Plant.

Electrical Risks :Explosions
• Occur when electricity ignites explosive mixture of material in the air

• Ex1. Electrical Spark in Hydrogen in

Battery Room (Lead Acid Batteries).
Electrical Risks :Explosions
• Occur when electricity ignites explosive mixture of material in the air

• Ex1. - Electrical Spark in LPG GAS.

Electrical Accidents
Most electrical accidents occur because people are working on or near
equipment that is:
• thought to be dead but which is live;
• known to be live but those involved do not have adequate training or
• appropriate equipment to prevent injury, or they have not taken
adequate precautions.
Types of Electrical Hazards

Contact with overhead power lines:

Types of Electrical Hazards

Contact with energized sources:

Types of Electrical Hazards
•Damaged or bare wires
Types of Electrical Hazards

Defective equipment or tools

Control Workplace Hazards

The Hierarchy of Control’s Methods are:

1. Elimination: Physically remove hazard.

2. Substitution: Replace the hazard.

3. Engineering controls: Isolate people from the hazard.

4. Administrative controls: Change the way people work.

5. Personal protective equipment: Protect the worker with PPE.

Planning and preparation for actions which are common to both dead and live working
● Dead working procedures

Controls/Mitigation Measures
Electrical Source Controls/Mitigation measures

electrical panel and Sources ● Restricted access, as applicable

● lock out of the electrical panel
● Proper PPEs including electrical safety
gloves

Exposed electrical parts/wires ● remove all exposed wires on site

● Do not use tape to repair the damage

Wet conditions ● ensure dry conditions when working on

electrical connections

Inadequate Wiring ● Ensure competent personnel are

working

Use of defective electrical tools, ● Examining tools and equipment prior to

equipments and/ or fittings use can identify an electrical hazard
before it becomes a threat.
RESCUE PROCEDURES/TIPS
Do NOT ATTEMPT TO PULL THE PERSON FROM THE ELECTRICAL SOURCE
WITH YOUR BARE HANDS, YOU MAY BE ELECTROCUTED.

● You should first attempt to turn

off the source of the electricity
(disconnect).
● You can use a non-conducting
object, such as a wooden pole,
to remove the person from the
electrical source.

WITH YOUR BARE HANDS, YOU MAY BE ELECTROCUTED.

● Seek Emergency medical

services
● If necessary, administer CPR
(if you are trained) until
emergency personnel arrive at
the scene.
