Cause- is the reason why something


happens.

 Example: I didn't bring my homework,


because my dog ate it.
What is Cause and Effect?

 Effect- is the result of something


happening.
 Example: If I take my pencil and push it off the table,
what will the effect be?
 Answer: The pencil will fall on the floor.
Identify the Cause!
-why something happens
1. I’m so full and couldn’t eat another bite. What
caused this to happen?
I ate a lot of food.
2. I made an “A” on my reading test. What
caused this to happen?

I studied for my test.


3. There is milk all over my desk. What caused
this to happen?

I knocked my milk over.


Can you identify the causes in the
following story?
 Betsy was lonely. She couldn’t have a pet because pets were
not allowed in her building. Then one day Betsy saw an
advertisement in the newspaper. “If I had a bird feeder like
the one in the ad,” Betsy said, “then I wouldn’t be lonely
anymore.” Betsy was right. Soon many birds began to come
to her feeder. She loved to sit and watch them.

 1. Betsy was lonely. What caused this?

1. Last week, I left my radio sitting out


in the rain. What will the effect be?

It will be ruined. It won’t work.


2. We have a test today, and last night I
forgot to study. What will the effect
be?

I might fail my test!


3. I planted some maize in the field and it hasn’t rained
for days. What will be the effect?

The maize will die.


(Fun Fact: Maize is a British term for corn)

scared. Every time I saw a witch I would scream.
When the witch would laugh I would hide under my
blanket. I will never watch a scary movie again.

11/28/17 TODAY I AM ABSENT – THIS WAS THE ASSIGNMENT:

Students are going to read “Simplexity” in their textbooks. As they read, they will be
doing the graphic organizer I have provided. Yesterday, I went over cause and effect with
them and we discussed different scenarios. Here, they will use this graphic organizer as
they read to help understand the concepts the author is writing about.
Example on how to complete the graphic organizer:
*The boxes on the graphic organizer represent the categories. For example, one
category could be Panic.
*The lines in between represent the possible causes. For example, in the Panic category,
possible causes would be seeing smoke, hearing screams, seeing people die, etc.
*The end result box (the head of the graphic organizer) is the ultimate outcome, or the
effect.

Using the graphic organizer from “Simplexity”, answer the


following prompt by writing an informative essay:
Explain how creating chaos with an obstacle, and thus reallocating
people’s energy, can be helpful during an evacuation. Make sure
to cite at least two pieces of evidence in each body paragraph.
Essay’s should be 1-2 pages in length (front and back) and each
body paragraph should have at least 6 sentences.
