Lesson 6:

Earthquake – induced
Landslide
1
Landslides may be caused by heavy
rainfalls or by ground shaking as a
result of earthquakes.

Through ground shaking, cliffs, slopes

and mountains may weaken causing
landslides.

Heavy rain and unconsolidated or

broken rock are aggravating factors to
the occurrence of earthquake induced
land slides.

2
Landslides are considered as the major geologic
hazard.

Landslide is a ground movement characterized

by rock falls and debris flows. The severity of
earthquake – induced landslides may be due to
the following:

1. Intensity of the earthquake

2. Slope of rock and soil
3. Other aggravating factors like rainfall and
irresponsible mining

Lesson 7:
Other Secondary
Earthquake Hazards
4
1. SEICHE
- It is also known as small waves.
(Seiche was described by the
PHIVOLCS as small waves)
- A phenomena characterized by the
splashing of water forwards and
backwards
- Can be caused by an earthquake or
tsunami
- Usually occur in bodies of water

5
2. FLOODING
- Is also considered as the secondary impact of earthquake activity
- May be caused by tsunami
- Large landslides may also cause flooding when it blocks the path of
water along river valleys
- Destruction of dams may result to sudden release of water that may
flood an entire community 6
3. FIRE
- Is another major secondary earthquake
hazard
- May be caused by burning candle which fell
during the ground shaking
- May also be caused by broken lamps,
pipelines, liquefied petroleum gasses and
others
- Big fires may be the result of the inability of
fire fighters to penetrate communities on
fire due to blockings along streets

San Francisco,
1906

Lila Ramos – Shahani of philstar.com

- She compared the result of the
catastrophic incident of earthquake in
Nepal to Philippines
- PHIVOLCS assessed that if an
earthquake of Nepal hits Metro Manila
the result would be catastrophic indeed: Kobe, Japan 1995
34,000 deaths and 1,144,000 injuries.
- In the US history, the most famous
earthquake initiated with fires which
burned much of the City of San
Francisco occurred in 1906.
