• THE TERM ART FROM THE LATIN WORD “ARS”. IS
OFTEN USED TO DESCRIBE THE FINE ARTS, WHICH
CONSIST OF PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE,
LITERATURE, DANCE, MUSIC, AND FILM.
• ART IS AN EXPRESSION OF OUR THOUGHTS,
EMOTIONS, INTUITIONS, AND DESIRES.
• ART IS A WAY OF GRASPING THE WORLD.
• THE ARTS REFERS TO THE THEORY, HUMAN
APPLICATION AND PHYSICAL EXPRESSION OF
CREATIVITY FOUND IN HUMAN CULTURES AND
SOCIETIES THROUGH SKILLS AND IMAGINATION IN
ORDER TO PRODUCE OBJECTS, ENVIRONMENTS AND
EXPERIENCES.
ART APPRECIATION
• MAJOR CONSTITUENTS OF THE ARTS INCLUDE VISUAL
ARTS (INCLUDING ARCHITECTURE, CERAMICS,
DRAWING, FILMMAKING, PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY,
AND SCULPTING), LITERARY ARTS (INCLUDING FICTION,
DRAMA, POETRY, AND PROSE), PERFORMING ARTS
(INCLUDING DANCE, MUSIC, AND THEATRE), AND
CULINARY ARTS (INCLUDING COOKING, CHOCOLATE
MAKING AND WINEMAKING).
• SOME ART FORMS COMBINE A VISUAL ELEMENT WITH

• THE WORD HUMANITIES COMES FROM THE LATIN WORD
“HUMANUS” WHICH MEANS “HUMAN” WHO IS REFINED,
CULTURED, AND WORTHY OF DIGNITY OF A MAN.
• IT IS ALSO BASED ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW OF THE
SOPHIST’S DICTUM OF THE GREEK PYTHAGORAS.
• THE WEBSTER DICTIONARY DEFINES “HUMANITIES” AS
ANY OF THE BRANCHES OF LEARNING EMBRACED BY
PHILOSOPHY, LITERATURE, LANGUAGE, ART, THEOLOGY,
NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES.
• HUMANITIES ARE THE STORIES, THE IDEAS, AND THE
WORDS THAT HELP US MAKE SENSE OF OR LIVES AND OUR
WORLD.
• THE HUMANITIES HELP US ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES WE
FACE TOGETHER IN OUR FAMILIES, OUR COMMUNITIES,

BRANCH OF PHILOSOPHY.
• THE TRUE NATURE OF ART WAS DEFINED BY
PLATO ON A COMPLEX THEORY ESTABLISHED
AROUND 400BC. BEFORE THIS, ART WAS
MEMESIS (A REFLECTION OF LIFE).

GORDON GRAHAM, GRAHAM REFERS TO
THIS VIEW AS AESTHETIC HEDONISM HE

OR ENJOYMENT.” THIS MEANS THAT AS
LONG AS IT IS PLEASURABLE, IT IS ART.
